George was a hometown hero, being born and living in Dayton, OH. His shop was like stepping into a time machine set to 1963. He always came off as a little grumpy to the young guys like me as we were growing up. But in the last 15 years or so he really mellowed out and enjoyed talking about drag racing with anyone willing to listen. He was a force to be reckoned with on the drag strip. Arnie Beswick has many stories of races and run-ins with Ohio George. Another major player in early drag racing history has left us. RIP George Montgomery, "King of the Gassers".

Here’s his twin turbo Boss 429 getting the best engineered award at E Town in 1971! Ahead of his time. A legend.
RIP George……

Legendary racer.
As a young pre-teen model builder I remember building his famous light blue ‘33 Willys gasser in 1/25 scale. Those gassers were one of my favorite classes right next to the AA/Fuel Altereds. Those were the golden years of drag racing, full of innovation and none of the same ol’ same ol’ cars competing today. RIP George. |

Rip Ohio george
This guy also gave one of the greatest quotes ever. Some writer noticed his SOHC equipped Willys had no tach so they asked George how he knew when to shift, to which he replied “We just screamed the cammer until it laid down.” What a guy!

Correction. It was probably the Mustang Malco gasser this question was asked about.

Saw Ohio George many times at National Trail Raceway in the early seventies. He was a fixture at that track along with guys like Ed Ekhart, Ron Garey, the Finks, and Tommy Elk.

Built models of his cars and saw them at the NHRA events in Dallas as a teenager.

RIP GEORGE.
Drag Strips to George Montgomery: "Leave the Turbo Car at home, people want to hear the noise" One of my co-workers: Danny Jones, worked with George on the Twin Turbo installation. Both are written up in many old magazines. Terry Hunt is correct Mustang Malco Gasser. One of my first "Turbo Heroes" (along with Bob Keller). You did good George!!!!! Tom V.
