Comp Cams 288R - Any combos out there?
Is any one currently running (or previously) a combo using the Comp Cams' 288R solid roller (51-751-9)?
http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...csid=1224&sb=2 Looking for info and opinions as I am thinking of pulling my motor over winter. Current combo: 455 .030" over (stock stroke & rod length) TRW flat tops 6x heads flow 244 @ .500" w/1.65 roller rockers CR approx 9.3:1 Crower 60919 cam, degreed in HSD ported to match heads (no plenum work) Q-Jet w/stock style RA air cleaner (hood is open) Car is 1972 Formula clone: Full weight (3800+??), auto w/2800 stall, 3.73 gear Hooker Super Comps w/full Flowmaster exhaust Thinking about swapping to this cam and maybe an upgrade to the heads. I am not looking to rewrite any record books, just looking to step it up some and I can get a great deal on this cam and springs. Motor only has about 200 miles on it in 3 years so for now just the cam swap and maybe open the heads up. All opinions welcome. Thanks - Kevin

We have that cam in a 455 with 71 HO heads, stock intake and q jet. I dont know if there has been any work done to the heads but it runs very well.

I have put that cam in a few engines. Good street cam. Changed it out to a http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...csid=1225&sb=2
and there was a noticeable difference. With the heads you are running I would like something with a split duration somewhere around 248/256@

Kevin,
Not exactly the combination your seeking information on but I'm running the 288HR in a 400 with 7K3 heads if you are interested. Dave

I'm running the newer XE lobe 242 248 solid roller w/ 1.65's. Like it a lot, could have used more cam, like the one mentioned above, but it is plenty streetable and pulls to 5800. If you do pull the heads, go to the 1.77 exhaust valve if they don't already have them. Get the flow up as much as you can. You can get over 200cfm from the exhausts pretty easily on the iron heads.....I would at least do that and then run it.

i'm using the XE lobes 3317 and 3319
to me its sorta tame but it does come on strong i also have a 107 LSA and gets 9.5" vacuum at idle i thought this cam would have been more radical at idle and its not i have thought about the magnum line with the 304/314 with .4 lobe lifts that should work nice with the round port heads i have i did have a friend run the CC305 regular hyd cam, and man... did it pull great in his car he swapped to a 288/292 XE roller and it was slightly more throttle responsive |

I have that cam sitting in my closet, but I wonder if I should go to something bigger when I build my engine . . .
