FINALLY tested the 69...
I finally took my 69 GTO to the track. It has a 462, 87cc Eheads, RPM intake 750 APD holley, Crower 60919, ACR rods and TRW flat tops, Redneck 2600 converter, complete Robb Mc fuel system with #8 braided all the way up, Turbo 400 and 3:55. Even though the tran was rebuilt last year while the car was apart, it was a mess. Ran 12.85 at 105.27. As soon as I left the line it shifted on it's own to second and when I shifted to third it sliiiiiiiiiiiid into 3rd FINALLY. It pulled good but theres no way to run it like this. I read some of the old post this morning and ordered a TRANSGO shift kit. I'm going to see how much that helps or if I have to go farther. Does this sound right for a stock turbo 400???

Jimmy something sounds amiss. My 69 GTO with a 400 and a 3.55 and a very mild hyd roller did a 13.2 @ 105 on Radial T/A's. Your MPH should be higher than 105.

Mr Jone, perhaps your ET should be way lower.
Many Stock TH400s can shift waaaaay sooon after launch. Many Stock TH400s can sliiiiid into 3rd. TRANSGO Stage 2 will fix those right up. You will need to retool the Govenor inner weights for desired WOT shift at Redline. |

Jimmy, you have a LOT more in that combo. We built a 455 couple of years ago with unported Edelbrock 87cc heads, Crower 60919 cam, and it made 505hp/551tq on the dyno, and pushed a 3800lb car to mid 11's at 118mph.....Cliff

Cliff,
I copied your advice on a motor build from a while back. That may be the one I copied. I also followed your advice on the fuel system. Only difference I remember is my Eheads have been ported and I don't think yours were. It makes real good power but drives right thru the transmission. I'm going to put the transgo kit it and try it again this weekend. I could tell there was a LOT still to gain. What else do I do to the tranny while I'm putting this kit in? governor??

I wouldn't mess with the governor until you can determine where it's shifting now.

What is your timing set at?What was your rpm crossing the line? What do you have for exhaust?

Timing is 36, not sure what rpm I was crossing at. Exhaust is Dougs best 4 tube headers with 2 1/2 exhaust but not sure on mufflers. The headers were capped.

"It makes real good power but drives right thru the transmission"
It's probably going to "drive right through the torque converter", let me know when you are ready for a 10" Continental unit to effectively hold all that power and run deep into the 11's in full street trim!.....Cliff

I agree with above. You should be 115-120 mph. Running out of fuel, major converter slip, or something else? Was the cam degreed in? -Jim

Cliff,
I may end up having to buy that converter but I'm going to address the trans first. My Transgo kit came in yesterday. I couldn't get anything accomplished in my 1st test with the trans shifting so badly. It shifted to 2nd almost imediately even though I had the shifter in 1st so I got nothing out of 1st gear. When it went from 2nd to 3rd it seemed like it took several seconds to get in there. After I get this trans kit installed, I should have a better feel for where I am. Then I'll move on to the next problem if there is one.

By the way, with it shifting to 2nd almost immediately, I had a blistering 1.893 60' time.

Get that trans fixed first. It sounds like you lost a lot of time there.

With the trans fixed it went 8.07 at 85 mph this weekend. It was 98 degrees, HOT and humid!! I left the headers capped. The 60' was 1.795 this time (tenth quicker) and "feels" good but I know there should be a lot more there. They were having a big race so there was very little test time. The Holley with 74/84 may be too fat in this heat and we're going to undo the headers this time. It was an 1/8 mile race only but at the 1/8 mile mark it was really pulling hard. It's just going to take some testing.

Just looked at my redneck converter paperwork. It's a part# 1110 10" "stalled slightly higher than stock" 2200-2500. Stall code 3-380.

So you are using the $160 redneck converter? If you have the 10" the maximum HP is 400 and you will need to step up to the Redneck version of the Continental which cost more $$. The 9.5" is the one you want not the 10". I have the 9.5" with stall code 3-082 and it feels like a stock converter until you get on it.
Cliff, I know the conti's are a nice converter but this seems to be a unfair comparison. Now can you see why he pushed through the cheap $160 version of the redneck converter? This is a 10" diameter stall converter stalled slightly higher than stock (approx. 2200-2500 rpm) for a GM TH-350 or TH-400 or Powerglide with a turbo spline input shaft (30 spline). ***If you have a 17 spline PG input shaft, you can buy this converter and tell us to make it for the 17 spline when you pay. This high performance stall converter features the following: * Anti-ballooning plates * Brazed impellar * Torrington roller bearings * Dual bolt pattern * Rated to 400 HP max * 90 day warranty and the better converter redneck offers: ***This is a 9.5" diameter 3000 stall converter for a GM TH-350 or TH-400 or Powerglide with a turbo spline input shaft (30 spline).
