I'm not sure what your power output is going to be but if it were me, I would get a Super T10 with a 2.64 1st gear with a cast iron case. It will be plenty tough for a street car running street tires. Probably around a 3:23 gear if it's a 455.

I have 2 TKOs right now in my cars.It is the single best thing I have ever done to them.I wish I was doing another car right now.If so I would give the Mcleod a try.I would buy it on ebay and pay with paypal as if there is any issue paypal will make it right for a buyer.Tom

I currently have a quote sitting in my e-mail box from Silver Sport for a TKO600 shipped for $5052.00. For me anyway, I'd have to save a minimum of $1000.00 to even think about doing the 4 speed over just going to the overdrive transmission.

Your car will be worth more with modern parts in it then a straight restoration, should you ever want or need to sell. At least in the current climate, the only cars that are bringing more as factory stock restorations are those cars that are historically significant collector cars. I'd hack the tunnel in a heart beat.
Jason,
Have you checked with Hurst Driveline? That's who I deal with. When I'm converting a car completely I'm usually quoted in the $4,000 to maybe $4500 range tops so it might save you a few bucks. Free shipping too. When I convert a car that is already a 4 speed I'm getting everything from them for about $3200. That's trans, shifter, cross member, yoke, reverse adapter, speedo cable with gear, and a new clutch disc. So you can see why I hate to spend nearly that much just for the M23Z trans with a 1:1 4th gear.

Edit: Forgot to mention. I said I buy the yoke (about $60) Because I have my driveshafts built just up the street from me. The driveline shop has been in business 40 years doing a lot of high end big HP off road stuff, and he builds an excellent driveshaft to any requirement I need for about $250-$300. I was done buying the driveshafts from the conversion places for $500-$600 after the last one I got was bent (they are supplied by Inland Empire if you're wondering) Even after it was straightened the driveline shop up the street said it still wasn't balanced properly. Just some of the stupid stuff I deal with, lol.

Based on the pictures it doesnt look like the TKO shifter is any different than the muncie. The muncie will work with a bench no question. In fact the overall dimension of the TKO doesnt look too far off from the muncie and I dont see why a big f'n hammer couldnt be used to clearance what you needed. Anyone go this route?

Get one and find out!At the worst you will need to order the patch piece!I have used Hurst Drive line also.My cars have been 4 speeds so I just ordered the trans,X member and speedo. My drive shaft guys supplied the yoke when he shortened it.You will need to figure what shifter handle to use.Tom

On my 69 a BFH wasn't enough. I hung the TKO and jacked it up into place and was pleasantly surprised how little I had to do to make it fit. There was some cutting and a short slit and a bit of the BFH. Carpet easily covered it and it in no way would interfere with a bench seat.
And as Tom said, best thing I've ever done to the car. With a 3.73 rear my 455 is turning about 2100 rpm at 70mph.

X 2.

I would add that I did mine before any "kits" were around and I really didn't find the conversion that tragic. I cut 1" out of the tab that supports the trans mount on the crossmember and re-welded it. Used an aftermarket speedo cable and for second gen F-bodys, the aluminum Ford Racing driveshaft for a 94+ Mustang is a bolt in with a conversion U-joint on the rear. I BFH'd some minimal clearance in the tunnel and carefully measured to determine what shift lever I needed from Hurst to use the stock console with the Tremec supplied shifter. Certainly not stuff I would pay thousands more to get in a kit.

Yall have almost convinced me. If I can confirm that it will work with the bench seat then I think thats what I will do because I cant see paying the same for a 4 speed thats just a deep first gear. I really wanted the legend but I just dont think thats gonna happen anytime soon.

Don't know what the Legends sale for but there's a new one listed for sale in NC for 3700.
Dude had a bunch of other new parts also; centerforce clutch set up, billet flywheel, lakewood bellhousing, etc...All for Pontiac.

Just for simplicity I been looking at American power train and hurst driveline. AP says they have a tko with a Muncie shifter location but hurst doesn't give any details. Anyone know if hurst will do that

Ok one more question then you can flog me. American powertrain says their tko 600 case is streamlined for minimal cutting. Is that advertising gimmick or is that some exclusive they have?

There's some casting ears on the case and other items that they remove to help clear the tunnel better, but nothing you can't do yourself with a cut off wheel and grinder.

I have the TKO-500 behind my 468 Stroker with a bench seat. The only thing that I have not done yet is try different top plate configurations.

I went from column auto to floor 4 speed then 5 speed. Since I used the 4 speed templet and THEN went to 5 speed, the stick is a little close to the bench. It wasnt an issue with the 4sp as it was further forward. That said, I need a new carpet anyway, so I will try and "Clock" the top plate and it should be close to where it should be so I can move the seat forward. But no one drives it but me so its been ok.

Plus, 80 MPH with a 28" tire on the car is like 2200 rpm I think. 100 MPH isn't 3,000 rpms..

The OD transmission is the best money you can spend!!!

Oh also use Robb MC for your dowel pins for the bellhousing. They are the best and super easy to use.
