1970 gear box
Can someone tell me difference between standard gear box and variable gear box. My friends is standard and mine is variable. My car sat for 35 years and had 124k on gear box. Is it recommended to.rebuild it and who provides this service. Im.building a good quality number matching ra3 and my friend a 70 ta clone.

There's an excellent description in the '70 service manual under the steering chapter.
Basically the variable ratio pitman shaft gear has a longer center tooth and provides a gear ratio that varies from 16:1 at center to 12.4:1 at full lock. This provides faster steering when making turns while not affecting straight ahead steering effort. Lee Steering in the LA area does excellent work. Expensive but well worth it. https://leepowersteering.com/pages/services

As far as I recall all second gen V 8, that had PS as an option or as a package option, had a variable ratio box. There are 2 ratios AS I recall in 1970. ANY bird with Formula wheel Has mandatory PS.
