Can I use my 389 flywheel in a 455 application and if so does it need to be balanced? Thanks in advance for any help.

The flywheel will swap, no balancing should be required.

If rebuilding the engine, ALWAYS balance it, required or not. You'll thank yourself when it runs so nicely.

As an added benefit, you can balance the pressure plate to the flywheel as well. You just need to make a reference paint mark to be able to align the two pieces back exactly as they were balanced. You would be surprised at how much they are out from the factory.

The 389 used a 10.5" clutch. Depending on the HP level of your 455 you may want to upgrade to an 11" unit and if so, the Hays billet steel unit is really nice. Just a thought.
Even if you don't have it balanced I'd resurface it and check it thoroughly for cracks that seem to go beyond the disc contact area. |
