Had a power outage, and now lab top can't find the routers signal (linksys). How do I re-set the IP address for the lab top or find it?? or what else do I need to do?? In the link status window it is not picking up anything.

We are able to pick up other signals that are unlocked, and if I go direct from the desks tops cat five cable I am online.

What operating system are you running.

Windows XP:

Start>Run> Type cmd> click OK.
At command prompt, type ipconfig to show laptop's IP address.

Are you connecting to Linksys with an ethernet patch cable, or WiFi?

Linksys may be set to DHCP to assign addresses to clients. Usually, default settings starting at 192.168.1.100.

Your laptop should be set (under TCP/IP) to obtain an IP address automatically.

wireless network connection.... media disconnected

When you type ipconfig /all and the adaptors are showing media disconnected, it has to make me think that the wireless is actually disconnected. I know that I told you to look for a switch, but maybe there is a function key on your keyboard that does the same thing.

If you want to try to force it to connect, assuming that your Linksys is functioning, you can manually enter IP configuration for laptop. Try entering IP 192.168.1.120, Subnet mask 255.255.0.0, and default gateway 192.168.1.1

Here are a few posts that I found online:

*there is a setting in your wireless properties right click your wireless connection box go to properties and there should be an advanced button on bottom click it and place a check in connect to non prefered networks

I had this problem and found that there was a switch on my laptop that physically enabled/disabled the wireless connection. On some laptops its a actual switch, and on others it's a function key (mine was FN-F2 for a gateway m460)

But I can pick up other unlocked wireless systems.... I still think it is just the router.

East you walked me through alot of stuff on the phone and thank you for that., But the lab top seems to be set up fine.... just can get a signal, but can't pick it up if its not being sent... right....

If I take the cat5 cable from the desk top and go to the lab top its fine and can jump other unlocked systems.... What else could it be other than a bad router.??? but I am no I.T tech either.

Did you check the SSID signal on your router?
In the wireless settings of the router, you can set the SSID signal to off.
See if it is turned on, the SSID is the "shout I am here" signal, where it will broadcast it's name. If your linksys is set to default, you should be able to pick up a wireless connection called Linksys. If the SSID is set to off, it will not broadcast it's name.

Easiest way to connect to your router is to connect a CAT5 cable to a computer (and the router), type 192.168.1.1 in the internet browser. It should ask you a name and password. If the linksys is default, name = <leave blank> and the password = admin.

If the linksys is on DHCP (default) it will give out an IP adress. Like told above, open a command browser by Start/run (start button then use the run option) and type in the command line: Ipconfig /all
Check the Gateway option. Probably that is on 192.168.1.1
That's the router.
If it is another address, try that in your browser to access the router.
Then check the SSID in the "wireless" option in your router.
Also check if the wireless is set to on.
I know that on some linksys routers the wireless function can be disabled.

Easy way to find your IP address is.... www dot IPChicken dot com. Remember, if you unplug your computer from your router and plug back in, your IP will change.
