Default Bought Me A 66 GTO Today

Search is over. Flew to Chicago and made a deal on a ‘66. Currently painted Nightwatch Blue. Running the original block and heads, which were rebuilt, and a little more cam added. Topped with a ‘66 tripower. Motor sounds good, and runs strong. Ralley dash, 4 spd, console, non ac car. Trans rebuilt, centerforce clutch, quicker ratio power steering, disc brakes up front. The original 3:55 rear was all refurbished and new bushings, but he sourced a 2:93 rear and installed that. 3:55 comes with car. Also, frame was removed, cleaned, painted, and all new suspension and bushings. Now, to get it home.

There is one issue that I need to dig into though. The passenger door will not open by the exterior handle. Inner handle works fine.

Congratulations, you got one!

I’m sure you will find items that maybe need attention or upgrading.
That’s the fun of the hobby.

One thing I may suggest is the radiator.

A higher performance engine, such as the “Factory“ 360 HP Tri-Power motor would have come with the larger (thicker 4 core) radiator.

It seems your 66 has the thinner 3 core version.

Also FYI, as always someone installed the valve covers backwards/wrong sides

Good luck and have fun.

Chris.

Not that my opinion matters...but i like this car 10 times as much as that last one. I hope you did better than 50K. This car looks like someone drives it. Tried and true.

Enjoy it!

Drives very well. Even with the taller gearing, it has some peppy acceleration. Need to get the 3:55 back under it. Fairly warm here today, and put a few miles on it, freeway and side roads. Temp stayed solid at 190-192. There are a few little things that could use some attention, but its mostly minor items. His asking price was 35k, so I felt I did ok on it, with money left in the bank.

Was 1979, had my '66 Lemans. One of our customers bought a '66 2+2 convertible. Had 421, tri-power, 4 spd. Candle light Cream, Black bucket interior. Car ran and looked like new. Only paid $600 for it. After having it for about 6 months, he decided to sell it, as he was tired of shifting. Offered it to me for $700. Me, being the dumb kid I was, laughed and said, "now what makes you think I want a boat like that". If I only knew. I didn't have that kind of dough back then anyway.

Try working the door lock knob up and down a couple times. Then, make sure it is all the way up. If it is off a little bit the exterior door handle won't work.

A goat with a manual and in a great color is always a winner.

Congrats!

Get out and enjoy it.
