Can't recommend Shaker455 on here enough! He did a 7043262 for me a few years back and it was spot on. Car sat for a few years and still fired right up with some fresh gas! He spent a ton of time giving advice on my build as well. Would 100% go to him again

68 qjet
Remember picking up a carb on eBay for my 68. Sent it out for a complete rebuild to reputable known source. Paid handsomely for rework and replaying. Installed on car and had many issues. Opened carb to find insides peeling amongst new parts. Called back and forth. Resent and received. Reinstalled to find no base plate vacuumed ports. Ended up selling the carb to the rebuilder at a loss. Sound familiar? Be careful, and I wasn’t a novice

Compared to all of the Q-Jet mods required to have the thing function properly on the vehicle tells me that by 1973/1974 the Q-Jet quality was not the same as the earlier stuff.
Tom V. Vote for Shaker455 too as Cliff has retired.

Just curious. To the gurus out there. When you test run a Quad on your test engines. Your engines are set up with,
X cubes, X compression, X cam etc. etc. How do you accomidate for customers engine running Y cubes, Ycompression, Y cam etc. etc. ? |

Tom V. Tom , all the later quadrajets were better quality than earlier ones. They had better float system and better well plugs for example. Each company ( chevy ,pontiac, olds, buick) did things a little different. They all metered fuel better than an after market holley. |

The newer the Quadrajet the better carburetor it will be. Even the excellent 1973-74 455 Super Duty units aren't nearly as good as a 1976-79 Pontiac carb from a 350 or 400.
The factory continued to make improvements to the design over the years and the new units will have better castings, better design, big CFM and dead solid reliable in long term service. Folks lean toward early units simply because emission mandates weren't as tight when they were made so they had more idle and off idle fuel, not because there was anything better about them anyplace. Take a plain old 1977 Pontiac Q-jet from a 350 engine. It has APT, excellent hinge pin location/leverage on the needle/seat, 850cfm when the throttle plates/secondary airflaps acheive full opening, converts easily to e-choke, the best secondary POE system used, and fully adjustable choke pull-off without bending anything. I use one on my own engine and nothing will outrun it on the dyno or at the track, and believe me many have tried over the years!.........Cliff

Cliff,
Out of curiosity, I have a quadrajet on the 301 Pontiac that came on my 1980 TA with a normally aspirated 301. I installed a rebuild kit that I got from you a couple of years ago. Afterwards the engine drive ability was great, power was about what you would expect for a stock 301. Throttle response was good enough to squeal the rear tires from a dead stop even with a 2:41 rear axel. Last year I replaced my stock 301 with a Buttler Performance 461. Just curious if the quadrajet from my 301 could have been used on my 461 if it was recalibrated. My apologies if this is a stupid question. |

Yes, the Pontiac Q-jet from the 301 would have done a fine job on your 461, as good as if not better than anything else you could have put up there....IMHO. The 301 carburetors still used the big castings so have 850cfm potential. They do however require a bit more work than one from a 350 or 400 as the factory limited CFM from the secondaries by not allowing the throttle plates to come nearly to full open plus they put a long "stop" on the air flaps to limit their opening as well. Otherwise they are very close to the carbs used on the 350's and 400's and even better than lack the large front vent tube that makes that variety a little more difficult to use in non-stock applications. So basically it would have only needed calibrated for what you are doing, a bend on the baseplate linkage to bring the huge secondary throttle plates to fully open at WOT, and grinding some material from the long stop on the airflap shaft to get them open to the correct point........Cliff
