Default Transbrake Button Location

1965 GTO - dedicated drag car

Currently I have the button on the dash in lelft hole where the radio On/Off-Volume knob was originally.

I am thinking about moving it to the left side of my steering wheel.

Where do you guys like mounting them other than the shifter? I already use the button on top of my shifter for a line-loc and I like that setup.

If anyone else is using their steering wheel what kind of cord are you using to the button?

Thanks
DV

Left side of steering wheel, I cut this little slot for easy on and off when I have to turn a lot.

Are you left handed?

I'd put it on the side of your dominate hand/arm.

I had mine net to the shifter. Moved it to the steering wheel (right side) and have a lot faster and consistent reaction times. I use my thumb and just pull my arm back. Pain in the butt turning with the cord hanging. Always seems to get caught on the blinker lever.

I guess the right side might be better given I am right handed. Feel like I am reaching a bit for it currently with it on the dash.

Mine is on the transmission tunnel to the right of the shifter - I need to get the to shifter as soon as I let go - since I dont have an air shifter. I do the 1-2 shift very quickly after I leave.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I will try the RH side of the steering wheel. It won't interfere with the turn signal lever and I am right handed. It looks like Biondo Racing has cords you can buy for this purpose unless someone has a better source.

Thanks

I'd go with a dual button shifter handle. I was too cheap to buy one, so fashioned a button mount to go under the handle, so its line lock under the handle, and Tbrake in the handle. More simply for you, and I know you like it, but Id swap them around and wire the Tbrake to the handle and put the line lock in the radio spot, since its not as critical a function for launch.

Wire it through your horn with a button on the steering wheel.
I don't use a TB but that is how I trigger my N20, I like having control

I have to be on the shifter with my poncho's too. they
rpm like a light switch. Real quick on the 1-2 shift.

I have my line lock on a two position switch mounted on the side of my shifter. I then use the button on top of my shifter handle for the trans brake. No reaching to the dash, no cord hanging on the steering wheel. I also have an electric shifter to do the shifting for me. Shifts at the same RPM every time all I have to do to grip the wheel with both hands and hold on.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys!

73 Lemans thanks for the idea but I start my burnout in 1st and immediately shift to 2nd once the tires break loose so I need my line-lock button the shifter. I tried starting the burnout in 2nd a time or two but didnt seem to work that well. Probably my fault, I still trying to get consistent with my current process.

Tim C - I can only hope that mine gets quick enough to need an electric shifter someday https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...ons/icon14.gif

Blueghost - will keep horn button idea in mind

You need to get used to doing your burnout in 2nd. Stab it HARD to get the tires going.
That 1-2 shft in the burnout is hard on a T400. You are lucky you have not broken something.

Thks Dragncar

I will definitely give it another try as I would ultimately prefer to start it in 2nd gear and not worry about making the shift

Dragncar - why is the 1-2 shift after the tires break loose during the burnout any harder on a TH400 than the 1-2 shift downtrack at say 5,500 rpm? just curious

Thks

This is the reason I don't buy the theory that shifting from 1st to 2nd and to third during the burn out could possible be harder on the trans than at full power going down the track.

It's not the actual shift that does it. It's when the shift point is 6000 and the slicks hook instantly instead of still going. (from the drop in RPM of shift) That stop makes the planetaries break from the sudden de-acceleration. (they are turning higher RPM than engine)
That's why you are supposed to ease off the throttle before the slicks grab on the burnout.
PG's are notorious for killing the tranny if the slicks grab on burnout. Always start in high gear.

My thinking on it is that if you can't spin the tires when wet in 3 rd gear, then you probably don't need a burnout?

I have been starting my burnouts in low gear for almost 40 years. I shift to second and then third very quickly. When i had converter freshened by ATI they said to keep doing what you are doing. I have never broke a trans doing it that way.

The reason is there are only so many dead stops in that sprag. You eliminate that hit starting out in 2nd. Its not a big deal to shift into 3rd form 2nd like the 1-2 shift is.
Tech at ATI told me that this morning.
If you run stock heavy drums its also harder on the sprag.
If you have enough power to light the tires up in 2nd its always better to do it that way.
