Default 64 distributor disassembly

Does the upper bushing have to come out to remove the points/vacuum advance plate. I have the shaft out and the screws out of the plate and it spins freely but it doesn't want to come off.

Thank you!

It is a tiny little retainer remy30006 and very hard to see if you do not know it is there.

Put a long phillips screwdriver in the shaft hole and then pop the retainer off the distributor.
otherwise it will disappear into the sunset forever.

got it. you really cant see that clip until you take it off. Does the felt washer need to be replaced if its soaked with oil?

Thank you

Supposed to be soaked with oil as a lubricant for the shaft inside the distributor.

The felt washer should be soaked with engine oil to lubricate between upper shat bushing and breaker plate.

Also remove the plastic washer, clean out the cavity under it including the two small holes in the upper bushing, then fill with good bearing grease for lubrication of shaft in upper bushing.

There have been entire threads devoted to discussing what is the correct lube to fill the cavity in the plastic washer. Sun Tuned is the expert. I am not. Just wanted you to be aware that some lubes are supposed to be better than others for this application. Maybe Sun Tuned or others more knowledgeable than me on this subject will chime in on the lube.
Good Luck,
Tony

How do you get the plastic washer out without wrecking it.

Somewhat tricky, but lifting it some from the inside using a small screwdriver and then getting another small screwdriver between washer and housing lifting in small steps usually works.

ACDelco Part-#1950569 if you need a new seal.

I was able to get the washer off in tact. underneath the cavity is filled with material, is it some kind of packing? does it need to be removed?

thank you!

I figured it out must be dried grease. cleaned it out. Will sand blast housing next week.

Thank you all!
