In a straight axle gasser syle car with the original front frame and crossmember replaced by rectangular tubing, along with front to rear braces, is using a steel front and steel mid plate enough? Or do I need a cross member added back in? It also has a 10 point cage.

I left them out. Probably should add them one of these days. The car has just been sitting. Too many other things going on the last 2 years.

Default got it!

Got the mid plate today. 32 inches long, close to where it will mount in my frame rails is 28.5 inches, so there is enough meat to do what you have too. I took the 6 converter spacers out, it did not come green I sanded and put a coat of self etch primer.
Can't wait to get the heads and tranny back so I can start this. I have soooo many projects on the car now!! It's snowballing!

Don’t want to over complicate your project, but something we did on my ‘78 that really works well was to put a locating dowel on each frame bracket for the mid plate. Load the engine/trans, locate mid plate on the dowels, tilt/lower to align front plate bolt holes and done.

No I am not going to use a front plate. It is a real street car, I am running the poly mounts from Butler, and I was thinking of putting an isolater in between the mid plate and frame mounts for the mid plate to help with vibration.

So take the top two engine trans bolt holes and install a long thread stud and lock tight it in . Use these studs to slide the motor in and put nuts on the back side. After you mounted a front plate weld angle iron horizontally under the plate for support and in front of the mount. You drop in the Motor and rest the front plate on the angle iron and just slide it in place. Works great.

Our Front Plate for a 78 T/A fits great and you don't even notice it. You install it with the STD motor mounts in place and the remove the mounts after it is located. See our site for pictures.

Ive run these, just welded them up some to adapt pattern to a bop. Probably not as strong since there is a seperate piece each side. But bolts to backside of trans so no spacers or longer dowel pins to deal with.

Bob, Does your front plate clear a manual steering box on a 74 bird?

Darby,

Contact the office and ask Frank. He would know best. I know for sure it works on a power steering car. We have sold more then I can count of the F body Front Plates.

If it does not fit you may return it if not cut up.

Default progress

Got it cut to fit in between the rails, I trimmed near my oil filter housing to make it easier on me. Waiting for my tranny to come back so I can connect it and mount it, then I can clamp and weld the side brackets and bolt to the mid plate. pretty simple job.
The one photo is my old mid plate lol.

Does your oil filter tilt back back at all? Mine is the angled one , will it still clear the plate?

Looks like it's dual pattern for the trans? Might go this route after seeing your thread and it'll be money if dual pattern. Just weld a nut on the back

Or ditch stock frame and do one of these.

Btw my stock frame with rack mounts, bop motor plate mounts, mid plate mounts and oil pan cut out will be for sale if anyone needs a nice modified stock frame.

Mine angles in, it clears, I just trimmed the bottom of the plate to make getting the filter wrench on easier.

Not sure what the other pattern is for, but yes there is a dual pattern.
