Default 3/8 Water Pump Spacer Cause Issue?

Adding a crank trigger to my 65 and the MSD magnet ring is 3/8 thick, causing me to shim my other pulleys out. Curious if spacing the water pump pulley 3/8 will cause premature failure of the water pump.

I’m also checking on a different crank pulley that may offset this or going to a Innovators West balancer with internal magnets not requiring the MSD ring.

Yes, spacing a wp pulley out even an extra 1/8" puts extra stress on the wp bearing insert.

A toothed wheel can lessen the gap to 1/8" difference, if that's an option. Some have installed them on the back side of the balancer, though I wouldn't in your case, as you're probably running an sfi balancer.

Yeah, I’m running an ATI.

Behind the balancer obviously has zero impact on spacing, the 1/8" is if you sandwhich it between pulley and balancer. I'm using one like that, it works great, but I dont know if its compatible with whatever you need to read the signal.

I’m planning to run a Hall effect type sensor instead of the MSD magnetic style. I’m also switching over from my Dominator to FAST XFI 2.0 fuel injection

I use a hall effect with mine. Very stable signal. Mine has one missing tooth, 36-1. It's used in conjunction with a MS3 ecu. I believe they're available with or without a missing tooth.

Here's a link to some. Plenty of other options. Not sure about FAST, but some ECU's can be set up to read a wheel running at distributor speed, if that helps you.

Thanks Scott. Worth looking into.

Good luck. Hopefully you can make a thread to show your progress. It will help others, and possibly help get us an efi section here. It would help those of us using efi on our traditional Pontiacs to have a place centralized for that type discussion.
