Default Distributor gasket

Seems like putting a gasket on the bottom of the distributor can be easily overlooked. What are your opinions on using a gasket or not?

Not using a gasket will most likely result in an oil leak.

leaving out the gasket could increase the chance for stuffing the distributor gear down on the oil pump shaft and causing oil pump damage

ditto on the above with respect to leaks.

also, IIRC, i read somewhere that the distributor gasket can be used to help set the endplay or clearance of the gear mesh.

end play is set on the dist shaft itself, then with different thickness gaskets you can tailor the standing height once installed.

that is, of course, one is that anal.

Tightening up distributor endplay too much and not using gasket may cause glitter in oil and binding ignition mech. advance....

At least .040" endplay using gasket is what Pontiac uses.

Off the top of my head, I can't thing of one V8 that came out of Detroit that either has a gasket or an O-ring on the distributor....

I think you want to say, I can't thing of one V8 that came out of Detroit that doesn't have either has a gasket or an O-ring on the distributor?

Sorry, didn't mean to become your 5th grade teacher all over again. But you know what I've let myself in for?

The picture shown was taken after the engine was running awhile and as you can see no oil leakage. I glued a gasket to the distributor using Black RTV, and setting in place to dry.
