What battery for my '68 GTO???
The dinky little no-name storage battery (7 yrs old?) in my GTO is fading fast despite battery tender and a shutoff switch on one battery terminal (+). I am looking for a recommendation here. I've heard folks say use an Optima to only bother with a wet cell. My '68 GTO is a weekend car and has a battery tender. GTO has a '69 GP 428 w/6x-4 heads, TH400. It has factory air (works!), the previous owners radio with amp (unknown specs), my old MSD analog 6AL box with MSD distributor, halogen headlights, no power seats, windows or crap like that.
Every parts store I go in has a different hype as well as the "battery specialists". With our late model daily drivers, it's easy...just get the same as what it has. Anyway I thought I would see what you all have to say on this topic (only post I found was 10 years old or so). By the way, is 34/78 the right size for the original tray size? Thanks, all!

Battery
Been well served by an autocraft silver
34/78-4 is part number 800 CCA at zero degrees 1000 cranking amps at 32 degrees Believe it's from advanced. Gerry

The 34/78 is NOT the correct battery. Your car is not a side post and the correct series battery is a "24".
I just replaced my 7 year old battery with another ACDelco 24PG. The 24PG (Professional Gold) is right battery and it is a true quality battery that performs really well and although not "totally correct" is the "correct" brand. |

I have a red optima. Seems to work well even when the car sits for a really long time. I am sure with the whack job before I had its wiring mess it has to have some draw on it.

Not the "correct" size, look, or color, but I love the XS Power AGM batteries. Summit & Jegs carry them, and most better stereo shops have them as well - but local autoparts stores do not. I've seen "AGM" batteries at the local auto parts stores, but those appear to be nothing like the XS Power and Braille AGMs..
I used the rather small S925 in a car with a lot of electrical load, high compression engine, stored w/o a tender for months sometimes, and it performed wonderfully for years. The CCA is VERY misleading on these AGM batteries, you can easily double its CCA to compare to Optima/lead acid batteries normal starting power. I've used Optimas in the past, but the XS Power has proven itself to be tougher and longer lasting for my purposes.

Battery
The battery I posted before is a top post. I am using original style spring clamp battery cables.

AGM is different than Gel. More power-to-weight.

The good thing about gel is less corrosion (I'm told) and in the event that you need to mount it not level, it is fine.
