This just came to me about my car so I thought Id see if mine is weird or if maybe I need to do something.

When I trailer my car to the track I unload it crank it and let it warm up some and maybe drive it around the pit area a little but its basically cool. The first run down the track will be real slow and the next run hot lapped around will pick and its about 3 runs before its sort of consistant.

Example last year at the PSN
first run 13.0 next run 12.3 next run 11.91. It sped up a little more after that but it was pretty stable.

I normall drive it to the track and Ive never seen this before to that extreme. tThe only other time it was only baout .3 change first to third run.

I've always hear cool the car down and it will run faster but I'm afraid mine would slow back down. btw it runs about 160 water temps after ite running good. Is this a E-head deal ?

oh and the next day after setting all night at the track it did not seem as bad.

Thanks

You'll need to have the engine, trans, rear end all at operating temp to get the fluids (oil) at the proper viscosity (thinner). Also, the pistons (forged) and rings will expand (seal) at the proper operating temp, giving you more power as they seal. You want to have heat in the engine enough to have good ring seal but, at the same time, have the induction system cool to add a more oxygen rich air/fuel mixture.

The 474 in the '79 runs very cool as well, at 160-165 degrees. I usually run it around at the track on the access road to get operating temps and warm the fluids up. I have always wondered if the car would perform better if the temps were up another 10 degrees or so. A little more heat in the engine may help with track performance.

Cool air/fuel charge, and warm everything else makes power. Or, so I'm told.

Do you have really heavy differential fluid like 140w ?
If you do it might need to be changed to something lighter.

My car usually seems to run the best on the first pass after warming it up in the pits. The difference is never more than .05 sec, and I think it's due to underhood temps being higher on following runs. Some type of cold air/ram air induction is in the plans for this year.

If I read your post right, your 3rd run was 1.1 sec faster than the first? I don't see how engine/drivetrain temps could make that much difference in ET. Sounds like you've got something else going on.

Besides by buddy 69goat1 says it only pulled the wheels because it was a manual trans car.

Now get it right - I SAID it is easier to pull the wheels dumping a clutch at 4000 RPM than it is in a foot braked T-400 car with basically the same engine - seen lots of mid - high 12 second wheel pulls in Manual cars - Mine would pull them with the old engine and the T-400 and 2800 stall and probably 50 or more less horse than yours - got it on video if you ever want to see it

Did you see the Chevelle at Centerville last yr that was pulling 2 foot wheelies with his standard tranny and turning 10.30 1000 ft times

Remember I HAVE IT ON VIDEO - He never shut off at the eighth - ran it out the back at somewhere over 8000 rpm if I had to guess by sound - I would have loved to line up with him
