A good wax is a great way to aid in car washes and keeping cars clean. You want the dirt to come off easy, water to sheet off leaving minimal residue.
This will open up another discussion for sure, but after 35 years of owning one black car after black car a good protective wax is essential.

Well he waxed the hell out of it LOL. My problem is it is covered in pollen and the waterless mist and wipe down ain’t gonna cut it. I don’t want something harsh to strip the wax ( like the dawn I use on my truck).

Did he wax it or polish it...big difference...? Basically if it was perfect before it should have been covered..now you are back at a detail stage...wash it dry it then go over the car with a detail mist..If I have problem spots Mequiars Ultimate compound works well to touch up spots and is gentle enough

Those work well..but if one has soft paint you can scratch the finish.

Yep here in Houston we have started the yellow/green pollen season. Never remember it growing up in Dallas but more pine and live oaks here.

I can attest to that, they do scratch soft paint, when used dry. For me i always use water and a good foaming car shampoo to encapsulate potential dust/dirt and have lubrication before removing dust/dirt.

Yes ..same with the waterless products..you need the right paint finish.

Lots of very good advice here - the ‘correct’ approach depends entirely on the type of paint you have and how your paint reacts to different washing and detailing products. One detailer can provide and incredible, sharp, streak-free finish on one paint, and then leave smeary, filmy streaks all over another car with different paint. Trial and error is your friend. If my car is only dusty - no splash - I will make up a concoction of diluted Wolfgang Rinseless Wash in a spray bottle and mist down the car HEAVILY one panel at a time before proceeding with the typical ‘rinseless wash’ technique. Misting it down with diluted rinseless before breaking out the microfiber wash mitt really helps lift the dust and dirt and lubricate the paint underneath to avoid introducing scratches to the paint.

I know how to wash a car. My question was more of a poll to see what people used that was gentle enough to not damage anything. Everyone is gonna have a preference I suppose but a meeting of minds usually helps me make a better decision. I didn’t want to just attack it with Turtle Wax.

Leafs, pine needles, sand ,and dirt ,sift there way to the bottom of fenders ,under glass moulding, frames, etc. Then over the years they quietly decompose and turn to a dirt form. Now your adding more water ( hose washing) to a bad situation. Why do you think Arizona and California don’t rust ( much ) …?? But to each their own…. I

I only wash the old car once a year. Keep it covered and dust it off after every outing should be good for most.

Bought my '71 A-body in spring of '91, was my daily driver all the way up to around 2006 or later. Car saw snow, ice, sat outside for months, drove it on dirty roads, you name it. Washed it with water all the time. Never rusted more than what little was on there when I bought it. (but I did protect it with coatings, and rinsed the rockers/etc often)

Did a quick paint job on it, and drove it for another 6 or so years. Tore it down for a frame-off, and all the areas protected were rust-free.

You can go back on here and look at it, I've posted many pics, and can look at the build thread. I've posted many times about the protective stuff I've used, too.

I say it makes sense to rinse off as much dirt as you can before touching it with anything, but maybe that's just my way of thought, and it may not matter much. It's worked for me though.

https://www.zainostore.com has a very complete line of detailing products. I use several including their wash.

Has the car been hosed down to check for water leaks and to make sure cowl drains are clear?

If not it's time
