what color is the plastic cover on the 70 8 track unit? trim color or universal black
my car has 253 brown interior. Also if it is trimcolor is the center section (knobs&tape door) black and the rest brown ? help

The large main plastic cover on the 69-72 8-tracks was trim color. They were made using diff colored plastics, just like the rest of the plastic trim in the interior. As the cover is also most of the faceplate, it is also same color as the interior trim (the covers were all one color, not two-tone with black section on face).

The knobs chrome plastic and the door for the 8-track is a brushed stainless finnish (but isn't really stainless, just looks like it).

The 68 8-tracks (a one year design) use a interior trim colored rubber (very much like endura) vinal grained border to the faceplate. A interior trim colored plastic cover and a woodgrain face with chrome metal knobs and same stainless finnish on the 8-track door.

The 67 8-tracks (again, a one year design. Also the first year offered in A-bodies) have a chrome pot-metal faceplate, interior trim colored plastic cover, woodgrain and same chrome metal knobs/stainless door as the 68's.

Dealer installed units may have just went with black cases, regardless of interior color.

Note: The actuall 8-track "unit" used in the 69-72 GTO 8-tracks is the same as those used in the early 2nd gen Bird console mount 8-tracks, but with different covers, obviously. Nice to know should you need parts or a working unit to fix a non working A-body set-up as the Bird 8-tracks are plentiful and realitively cheap. Of course, you still need a A-body plastic cover to convert one of the Bird units, but at least the guts are easy to find.
