Default Bang! It's over Johnny.

Sorry for the clickbait lol, just my passenger side muffler, not my motor.

The distributor connector plug (coil north and south/engine ground) was making intermittent contact and caused a massive backfire on startup.. I had replaced the plug once before as it fit the cap poorly and would work itself loose, so did this one except the contacts partially backed out of the plug when inserted making a momentary contact even though it appeared fully seated.

The car normally fires at the turn of the key but with an unfamiliar, new carburetor on-board (Qjet), I wasn't sure what to expect when leaving it sit a week without driving. As I cranked it over a few times it wouldn't fire. I ran the electric fuel pump a bit thinking the float bowl had run dry and tried it again and quickly realized there was no spark.
I wiggled the suspect plug, found it fully seated in the distributor and attempted to start it again with an exhaust system full of fuel mixture. Normally this is no issue, as the engine starts and excess fuel is pushed out. In this case, the plug made momentary ignition contact while the engine spun and the unburned fuel lit off like you fired a .30-06. It was so loud my neighbors came running out expecting to see someone lying dead from a gunshot.

I knew the sound (not a carb backfire) and of course, knew I blew the muffler up. Once it was running I could hear one of the baffles rattling inside the muffler so that's next on the never-ending list.

I was getting tired of the loud chambered mufflers anyway.

I once a one of my carbs flooding out on my blower motor and I did not know at first what was going on so I hit the throttle hard to try and clear it out and the fuel in both mufflers lit of and blew the shells right off them.

It was some noise!

Use to do this for fun in my buddies '65 Ford Galaxie with a 390/Cruise o'matic. Turn the ignition off while driving, pump the throttle a couple of times, turn the ignition back on....BANG.

Got way too ambitious once and pumped the crap out of the throttle which resulted in blowing the entire exhaust system off of the car once the ignition was switched on. Scared the hell out of the drivers in the other lanes (middle of 3 lanes).

Back in 1983 four of us hopped in my GTO headed out to chase girls. The always reliable Poncho didn't fire right up and in the 3rd try to start it it backfired. None of us could hear anything for a minute or two. It was like someone set an M80 off inside the car with the windows up.

The next day I looked into what happened and found the timing chain hanging out of the oil pan and both mufflers looking like puffer fish all blown up.

In the end my theory was the was the balancer snout had failed and the pieces ended up in the timing gear and of course a piece went up number one cylinder wall.

Boy oh boy, I know the BANG and it's over feeling.
