Default 4L80e, worth this price?

"I have a chevy 4L80E transmission for sale, its low miles and works well. I have the transmission, stand alone computer, wiring harness, software and carb. TPS adaptor (so u can run a carberated engine with this tansmission). I am asking $2200.00 OBO. There is NO torque converter"

That's a direct quote from his ad. I've got him at $1,800 now. Is it worth that much?

What controller (computer) is it? The controller is usually as pricey as the trans. The combined price sounds good provided the trans needs no work.

OK so a Used Trans, Ummm I'd say 1800 with the Converter as those are Real Exspensive from a Good Company Like PTC!, In Fact talk with Jake Shoe On here Before you buy a used one because he may be able to get you a new one all built up for that price

...but not with a controller. If the controller is one of the good ones like Compushift will cost you $1,000 - $1,400. So, as I asked, what controller. If one of the good ones, the price is right.

It is a TCI controller, harness and TPS from what I can tell looking at photos. I'll call tonight to confirm it. The transmission is supposed to be a GM Goodwrench box trans that has about 2000 miles on it. Note that there is NO converter and the unit will have to be set up for a mechanical speedometer for my TA. More $$$ to me but I'd have to do that regardless of buying new or used.

Update. I called and spoke to him. I misunderstood one thing. The transmission has under 10,000 miles on it. The transmission was a replacement for his buddy's Suburban from GM but he doesn't know what year it was. When the Suburban was wrecked they pulled the transmission and he bought it. The other parts are all TCI but that's about all he could tell me. I'll go look at it tomorrow. What should I look for?

The TCI controller is likely the older model, and you can buy those new now for $500 or less.

The new model TCI controller is made by PCS. About $800-850. Good setup. We just used one in a '68 Camaro with a 4L80E.

My 4L80Es are $2200 built using a new 34 element sprag, High Energy clutches, rollerized rear planet to case, fwd hub to direct drum, dual fed direct drum, new boost valve, valve body updates, new pan, and new bands. That includes the core charge for an early style core, which I prefer for most retrofits due to cooler line location.

I'll be looking into making my own mechanical speedo setups on the Bridgeport for the 4L80E in a few weeks to bring costs down on that. There is a Cable-X box you can use to convert the electronic signal to mechanical for less than $300.

I have also started selling converters with my 4L80Es as a package deal.
Excellent 9.5" units that can use the 6 bolt flexplate.

They are $475 with a trans purchase.

That should at least give you some idea of pricing.

$1800 isnt a bad price but I wouldn't consider a killer deal if its the old TCI TCU.

I'm currently using a Cable-X box, and the only thing I don't like about it is that
A) no speed in reverse, aka, no j-turns know how fast you're going!,
and B) on a fast accelleration, it take the speedo a fraction of a sec to 'catch up' to the speed, like, you'll get to 80 mph quick, look down at the speedo, and you can watch it go to 80!

Jakeshoe - for the speedo conversion, know what would be slick? Have a contained motor for the drive down by the trans itself, so you don't have to mess with short cables, wires, etc, would all be right down there where it needs to be. I've looked at the tail housings, nice, but pricey, and what if you want to go to an elec speedo? Maybe I'm just whining!


I will say that the 4L80E is the nicest auto trans I've every had in a musclecar, hands down. Shift characteristics, performance, and adjustability are all more than I could have ever asked for.

301002 is the number on the controller. Is that part number the newer controller? When I google search it I get to the FAST site with the same number. Is FAST making the controllers for TCI?

OK, to answer my own question, that part number is used by FAST when they sell a stand alone controller via FAST. It is a TCI branded box but their part number since FAST is a sister company to TCI, or at least that's what the TCI rep tells me.

Thank you to those who responded. I talked him down to $1,300 so I did purchase it. The TCI controller is the FAST unit and the harness is unmolested. The fluid in the trans was clean and did not smell burned. He had the linkages, software, etc. The only thing missing was the torque converter and the dipstick tube. Overall, I think it was a decent deal, so long as the transmission is OK.
