Default My '72

Bought this car about 2 months ago. Only items found not original is the 1980 JC Whitney imitation side pipes and S/S Cragars. 55,000+ original miles, 455HO, 4 spd., working A/C, power brakes, all items in original working order including am/fm radio and cig lighter. Even has the original mono dash/rear deck single speakers. Still holds approx. 90% of original paint. PHS'd shows sold from dealer in Broken Arrow, OK in Sept. 1971 then reg'd in PA until 1984 still to original owner. Resold from PA used car lot to the guy I bought from who shows as 2nd owner.

Although definitely a '72....has '71 grills??? This is probably the 10th '72 I have seen with the '71 grills.

Im ashamed to say what I paid for it...lets just say it was much less than what it sold for brand new in '71!

I thought all 72 GTO's with the 455 HO option had to have the Unitized Ignition and the Heavy Duty or Ram Air Air Cleaner ?

Agreed.

Street Rodder, would you be so kind as to post a scan or good quality pic of your PHS invoice? Besides documenting such an awesome GTO, I am collecting ALL 455 HO docs for a future database project.

Mucho thanks, welcome aboard and congrats on "stealing" such a rare GTO!

It still has an original "Made in USA 1970" stamp on the bottom of the gastank showing clearly!

It was already cloned into (and put up for sale as) a GTO so no more LeMans Sport emblems and fender gills. If they hadn't been removed before I would have definately kept it a LeMans Sport.
I Just added the wing, stripes, wheels, eibach springs, and some other stuff. Got the hood tach painted too, but I'm afraid to drill my mint hood without a template...
Still got some plans for the future; loose the 2.56 peg leg, add QR steering box and a thick formula steering wheel.
It might not be a "real" GTO, but I'm darn proud of it!

i got to ask and please dont be modest, what kind of reaction do you get driving a car like that over in the netherlands?? people just stare in disbelieve, awe or whatever here , i cant imagine the reaction it must get over there. love the wheels on that lucy blue.

I'll throw up a few pics of my '72. It's not as nice as a lot of yours but it's what I could afford. I don't have any recent pics and I haven't scanned the pics to the computer of when I got it yet. Here are a few earlier ones:

Here's a few more recent, but not up to date:

Maybe one day it will do that without the jack stands.

Welcome to the forum Sean. How about posting some details? Do you have a PHS for your ride? Or a pic of the cowl tag?

I haven't figured out what PHS means yet.

I did find the build sheet over the gas tank when I changed the frame, it was rusted out, bent and cracked. It has a 350 2 barrel and had the TH350. It was stock and complete when I got it, except for the missing sheetmetal. I swapped in a 200-4R for overdrive, and ditched the points distributor for an HEI from a '78 Grand Prix. I also had to put in a new gas tank and redid all the brake lines. I'm about to do a 4 barrel swap also, might even start that today.

Cool LeMans project. Good luck with it. Sounds like you've made some good progress already..

PHS means Pontiac Historical Society. They offer copies of many of the original documents for your car, from when it was ordered and built. It's about $50 nowadays..

Sean,

Here's a PHS doc sample; it's from my '72 LeMans.

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...pictureid=3796

Here's a link to good documentation site also.

What color is your car?

I'm having some trouble with my Photobucket, but I did get some pics downloaded. My build sheet says shadow gold for the color, but it has been repainted and I don't think the color is right. I want to paint it like my dads old LeMans, blue with a white painted roof. Here's the cowl tag:

And the build sheet I found, 37 years above the gas tank was not kind to it:
