Here's a question for the experts. . . This car has a plastic front lower valance. I'm almost positive there was never a reproduction piece for the '70 Tempest/LeMans/Sport, so any idea if the plastic valance was build date or plant specific? This car came out of the Pontiac, MI plant in June of '70.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the valance should always be color-matched, but having never seen another plastic valance, could it be that they were supposed to be grey? I'm guessing not and that it was a screw up when this car was painted.

From this plant photo, it almost looks like this car might have a grey valance. Thoughts?

Also, I've notice that some '70s have full amber lenses up front whereas others are amber/clear. Any thoughts on what dictated that? My LeMans parts car (Arlington) and the Tempest (Pontiac) are the latter, while this LeMans Post Coupe (Baltimore) is full Amber.

This LeMans is a 40k mile original, by the way (repainted 20 years ago - Palomino copper). I almost bought it right before finding the Tempest, but the seller couldn't go through with it after 34 years. It all worked out though, because now there will be two goons roaming the streets in '70 Post Coupes in my area now!

That front seat has already been repaired once. The fabric insert is supposed to run across the entire seat bottom. Like in this picture of Paul Glasgo's Magnum 400 Tempest

I didn't find this out until after I had my seats redone and the upholsterer copied the repair that had been done by a previous owner years before. They've salvaged the undamaged material from the seat bottom and added a strip of vinyl in the middle.

Here is how my seat looks

Ah, that's very interesting! So there's enough spare material to do the repair if the vinyl is stitched in the middle? That would make sense that it would be a continuous strip across given that's how the backseat is.

Any more pictures of your car?

Yeah, I think they usually tear at the driver's side, so you could just split what's left in half and fill in the gap with vinyl.

My car's not very pretty yet...the interior is in the better shape than the rest of it. I just added some more pictures to my thread to keep from cluttering yours

I didn't mention it before, but congrats! This is a beautiful car, I saw the post on the facebook page about it when you got it.

Thanks! I'm elated to have found it!

Speaking of T-37s, here's my aunt's '71 in Canyon Copper. Between it and my dad's '70 Tempest, I was destined to become obsessed with these cars!

Agreeing here on the seat pattern.

Here's a couple pics of the 47,000 mile 71 Lemans I sold last year - another car I bought planning on taking apart but let go because it was too nice.

Wow, I shudder to think about a car that nice getting parted out. Glad you let her go!

Man, the blue '70 Tempest interior is really pretty. But what's with those door panels? Are those '71 or '72?

Those are '70. They were also used on the 70 LeMans (non-Sport only, and that added a Lemans badge) and the '69 Custom S (also with a badge) as well. They've only recently started reproducing those panels.

edit: the panels for the post cars may be slightly different, I don't know for sure. The 4d cars had a completely different pattern.

Thanks for posting! That's got to be like the Gold interior my dad's '70 Granada Gold Tempest had.

Not necessarily part it to the shell, there were a lot of perfect pieces on it that I intended on swapping on to other cars - in fact several of the interior trim pieces, rear view mirror, ashtray's etc. made it onto my 71 Judge while the less nice ones went back onto the car.

The front bumper was supposed to get swapped with the one on my GT-37 and the rear one with my Judge plus some other items but I got lazy and sold it with extra polyglass GT's on Rally II's I had & kept the steelies.

Yep, I see those now in the 1970 full line Pontiac Catalog, as well as my exact interior (with the full length cloth across the front.

From the order sheet, I don't even see how those panels in the Magnum 400 could have been ordered in a Tempest. I'm guessing those aren't original to the car. Thoughts?

Kylek350,

Very nice Tempest Kyle. I got pictures of that car a few years ago from my brother who saw it on ebay. I'm glad it went to someone who knows how special these cars are. The door panels on Paul Glasgo's Tempest are actually for the LeMans. I don't know the car's history, but it may have come with them from the factory and I never heard about 2-dr hardtop Tempests (T-37's) coming with LeMans trim, but you never can say never.

Here are pics of my 4-dr sedan '70 Tempest (factory 400 2-bbl/TH400 trans) cloth interior in gold and the Tempest door panel pattern.

Those panels in the Magnum 400 are original. My car has them also. If you look at some pics of 70 GT-37s you will see them there as well. both of the cars in your post are 4 door sedans, looks like one is a LeMans and the other a Tempest or maybe a Safari?

Wow, that car is beautiful! Granada Gold with Gold interior! That is honestly the first '70 Tempest in that combo I've seen since my dad's! Having a car like that with factory 400 is a dream!

I'll have my car at Norwalk next year. If love to see that one if you're going!

Yes, one is a base LeMans (23569) and the other is a Tempest (23369).

Very interesting. That's the crazy thing about trying to learn everything about a certain model of car; there's always curve balls like this. Maybe it's a plant specific thing, maybe it's an assembly screw up, maybe it's a case of "eh, we're out of Tempest panels, grab some for LeMans".
