Assembly Line Markings
Paint Dabs & Parts Decals
I’m about to detail my car and was looking for guidance on the application of the repro chassis decal kit (available through Pontiac parts suppliers) as well as original inspection markings. Please chime in with photos and other details anyone can share about this topic for a ‘69 Firebird assembled at Lordstown. (Let any controversy begin… lol). I’ll add a few pics I found online (to be posted separately). Thanks to all who can help with this.

That's a classic photo but does not contain the detail I'm hoping to gather here.

I can't imagine driving a car like that. I can "imagine" owning a car like that, but not driving it, so what's the point of owning it?

Remember, these marks also varied from build plant to plant. Norwood, Lordstown, and Van Nuys. Even time of day, they varied a bit.

I agree with you somewhat. I have both a 69 Firebird convertible my "driver" and a total 69 TA show vehicle. My Firebird was a total basket case and I rebuilt back to new. No markings were found on it. 69 TA needed a lot of work but complete for most part. During resto on TA I found many markings so I duplicated after a complete resto. Ok to pass this stuff on if a car is complete enough, And yes, TA gets driven but not as much as the vert.

It would be helpful to have pics posted of the markings as a resource here. Thanks.

I did so many many years ago on this site under "SteveK" circa 1996 - 2016. My resto was 20+ years ago on my TA. and 25 and 30 years on my other 69 FB cars. I also volunteer at Pontiac Oakland museum in Pontiac Mich. with my brother restoring many various cars. Most documentation can be accessed in the POCI Library which is a great resource to this hobby as well as this PY/Ames Forum!

Whoever dabbed the steering arms was not concerned about the paint bill...

Was that actually from the factory or a 'restored' car?

SteveK/Johnta1:
Well, I joined POCI... only to discover it's essentially a dead site as far as current activity. Also, the Library is not online. I am hoping to tap into knowledgeable sources (with pics) of the correct assembly markings for a '69 Firebird. I was unsuccessful in locating anything here under 'SteverK' despite my search efforts of the archives. I would really appreciate any further help either of you (or anyone else) might be able to provide. I can also PM this topic if preferred. Thanks.

I believe a lot of the paint daubs were made only on cars that were selected to be 'checked' for quality control? (so most vehicles would not have those paint daubs?) POCI has info for Service Bulletins and under Tech articles also. I usually don't peruse the forum there though. I'd check out this site for a LOT of info on the building of Camaros which a lot applies to the Firebird. http://www.camaros.org/

Thanks John. My typo in the post only, I actually searched SteveK but came up empty on a thread for this topic. Can anyone locate it and show the thread? I’m really looking for pics… and guidance on where the parts decals are to be placed.

Most of the inspections were 100%. Things like steering gear bolt torque to frame, or pitman arm to gear, Air conditioning connections and other critical safety items were inspected 100% while the vehicle was on the line. Marks were also made on the build sheet/repair ticket, more frequently than those that were placed on the vehicle itself. Vehicles that were pulled at the end of the line for quality audit were not marked in any way. K
