I'm guessing it's an SRT, not just a plain old Neon. Those things are fast in stock trim, and can be made REALLY fast with modifications.

I bet I did about that speed on the Autobahn 20 years ago..... I couldn't tell you exactly how fast I was going because I had rented some type of Peugeot in Paris and it had some ridiculously low mileage terms. As we were traveling way over the allowed mileage (Belgium, Germany, and back through Southern France) it forced me to disconnect the speedo cable

I just did some body work and paint on one of them ?...they are crazy fast.My buddy had one ,and drove it to English Town to race some Mustang guys that were calling him out on Facebook.Drove it down with the AC on and getting 34 mpg....go to the drag strip, put on his drag tires, and asked the mustang guys if he could get some racing fuel...they said you will need more than that ! He turned up the boost on the big turbo he installed...and proceeded to kick everyone ass....10.80's all night long !! The fastest Mustang was 11.5... True story..and this was 10 years ago.

I've done it when I was younger and dumber - but on freeways in the desert with miles of visibility. My current daily driver allegedly has a top speed higher than that, but I've never even been close to it.

It doesn't look like he could see that far on that highway, and that he deserves to go to jail.

I guess if he was OK with going 140+ for over ten miles, having an expired inspection sticker and no front plate was the least of his worries.
Dumb kid.

Never been that fast - not sure I would want to be on any public road these days.

I've driven that stretch many times- even during tourist season it's pretty desolate. He'd have been more likely to hit wildlife than another car. A moose or even a dear would have obliterated that Neon at that speed!

I'm fully aware of the abilities of a hopped up SRT Neon… but in the end is still a Neon. The idea of going that fast over distance in one scares me.

When I saw the headline, I pictured some rich foreign student in a high-end sports car blasting back to UMaine (or one of the many private schools) from a weekend in Boston. Just last month a Saudi student was killed when he was passing cars at a high rate of speed going down Cadillac Mountain Rd. on his Ducati motorcycle.

Same here.

Stuff happens fast at that speed and the heart of that car is, well, a Neon.

I'm sure he upgraded the suspension, tires and brakes to handle 150mph in a brick horsepower.

Apparently he has a local Pep Boys.

It doesn't sound that bad to me. I drive 100 at least semi-weekly on the NY/ CT roads in off hours. If I were to splat the pedal in a car capable of 146+ I'd be at that speed in 5 seconds. If he only hit 146 and then let off, I don't see the big deal. If he had the cruise control set, different story. You guys are telling me that if you had a mustang, camaro, challenger, vette , SS you wouldn't give it a shot ? I cry BS.

Yes it is a neon, but any car would be toast hitting a moose also at 70+

I hit the speed limiter on the GTO when we first got it. IIRC it is set at 156. It took a few seconds to get there and I immediately got off it. Not another car in site for miles at the time.

Had my old '69 GTO up to 120 on a country road once. Ran out of speedometer though so not sure how much faster I could have gone!!!

Getting nailed doing 146 means that the next time he's clocked, it'll be around 18 mph on his Huffy.

As Goatless said.... it is pretty desolate up to Holton. Even worse on up to the Canadian border at Van Buren on 1 and 1A. You see more moose and deer than cars at times. Be extremely careful at night.

Yup. I guess it wasn't a terrible place to open it up on, but if he ever screwed up it wouldn't be pretty. Those trees aint gonna move!

LOL... all to true. But, those moose and deer don't usually move either when caught in your headlights. I saw that one night in Mars Hill at the split for 1 and 1A. The moose was mush and the front end of that International Eagle COE was just as bad. Thanks God the truck driver wasn't hurt. There was nothing left of the frontend of the COE.... radiator included.

I've been 168mph in my 92 Trans Am when it had 2.78 gears still. Been 170mph+ on my Ducati. I'm sure I'll try 155mph in my 69 Firebird before I swap out the 2.56 gears haha!

In my part of CA we go out by Ridgecrest on the 14 towards Mojave and fly past California City in the middle of the desert at those speeds in the middle of the night But right now I'm broke and unemployed so new tires will have to wait for that, oh well

Only thing that could happen is you explode a jack rabbit crossing the road and even those seem nearly extinct nowadays.

Thumbs down

It just goes to show you can make anything fast. With a lot of cash, a bunch of modifications and a big ass hairdryer, you too could go 146 mph and look like a d-bag in a 4 door 4 cylinder Dodge Omni. I'm not impressed......
