I talked to a gentleman, Monday at the Lakeside Mall car show in Sterling Hts., he had a gold 1986 Fiero SE with a 2.5 automatic. He is the original owner, and he was telling me about the upcoming show. He said it was going to be at the M1 Concourse., with some track driving options. My kids both drove a similar looking gold Fiero SE but a V6, when they were in high school. He was interesting to talk to. He had a beautiful car that looked brand new.

Bought a new one in '86. Neat little car, if space allowed I would not mind having another to play around with. Underappreciated I think in the collector world? I think they have a love/hate relationship. We were getting ready to be married and on a budget, my wife to be just had to have one, all we could afford was a base model. If I could get one it would def. be a pace car. My old neighbor had (has?) a later model GT in the garage that was bought new. In my ten years or so living there it never moved. I often wonder if they still have it.

I had a base 5 speed 88 that took the teeth off the cam gear at over 100,000 miles. I changed the cam gear out, and back on the road again. I sold it at 140,000 to a friend, of a friend, after it got wrecked, but it was still driveable.

I also picked up a 86 for my daughter, with a bad engine. I swapped engines and she drove it for a couple years. It was a 2.5 automatic. Unfortuneately the engine I swapped wasn't top notch, and burned oil due to the #1 piston slapping GM debacle.

The 88 had the improved engine in it (tech 4), and it never used oil like the earlier engines did. That 88 had to be one of the lowest cost per mile cars I've ever had, paid $500 for it at 66,000 miles and drove it long and hard, put one clutch in it lying on my back in an apartment complex parking lot with only basic tools. The joys of going through a divorce.....LOL

I bought it at the height of Fiero negative public image craze, hence the $500 price. The guy had it for sale for months at $800, and no takers. I offered him $500, and he took it.

The Z24 3.1 V6 cavalier I bought down in Memphis that had some front end damage to it was the only other car that I got so many miles out of for less money expended. I paid $200 for that and had to put a radiator in it to get it back on the road, The A/C even worked on it, and was cold as you'd ever want it to be. Bought it at 110,000 and the timing gears and chain went south at just a tick over 200,000 miles.

I liked both Fieros I owned, if I found a good deal on one that wasn't beat to death I'd buy another one. Preferably a 88, because they had all the bugs out of them by then.

I had an 87 4-cylinder 5 speed, base car. I bought it in 2002 with 129,000 miles and put over 100,000 miles on top of that. I could get almost 40 miles a gallon on the freeway, but it was sure slow. It was a good car except for the rear parking brake. What a poor design. I drove the car 100 miles a day when our group moved out to the GM Milford proving grounds. Typical oil leaks, because of RTV instead of gaskets, but that 2.5 ran pretty well. A head bolt broke at 199,700 miles and was leaking coolant. Ironically there was a bulletin put out back in the 1987 timeframe, about broken head bolts on the 2.5-liter engines. Kent Moore even made a pretty slick kit to remove and replace the broken bolts. Why mine went on the way to work with that many miles, 20 years later is a mystery.

Bought my 84 in 95 with a little over 100k miles for $300.
Was a trade in at a friends lot and he made me a fast deal on it before it could catch anything on fire.
In great shape with newer tires and ran great.
White, SE, alloys, luggage rack

I painted it Black and added a 86 GT trunklid & rear spoiler.
Drove it about 3 years and parked it when the cam gear stripped.
Enjoyed the car.
Only complaint was the accelerated wear rate on rear tires.

I bought an ‘84 Fiero back in ‘96. I dropped a sbc 350 in it back in ‘99 and put ‘86 GT front and rear fascia on it along with the rear spoiler and a Mustang II hood scoop on the trunk lid. I still have it to this day. It runs like a Fiero always should have.

I’ll probably keep it a little longer.

TS, nice looking car.
My sister in law also bought one new in 84. She was commuting well over a hundred miles a day. After about a year the car would be in the shop about every six months for some kind of motor rebuild. Im not sure what it was, only remember at the time that my brother would talk about it going back into the shop. My wife was the primary driver our '85 my big complaint wasnt the 30 or so mpg but that it had such a small gas tank. Got great gas mileage but being a commuter car still had to go the gas station about every three days.

It's probably because of limited interest. The few posts about Fieros seem to be in the Other Pontiac section, along with Astres and other uncommon cars.

There was way more cars at the show than I expected. Too bad it was wet out. I talked to a guy who drove in from Nebraska. Swap was small, but it had one. I didn’t get over to Crofoot or M1.

It was at the same Marriott that hosted the GTO thing a few years ago.

I always thought it was strange how the 4cyl was 2.5 and the V6 was only 2.8

That Northstar swap is cool and classy

Good to see this post. I typically do not cruise the Lobby but I might more often. Anyway, I bought one of the first V6 GT's off the line in the spring of 85, a 4 spd, Loved that car. I sold the 86 in my signature panel and now looking for an 88. Early on, Pontiac had quite an assortment of performance parts for the 2.5. First off, a Super Duty version. Much like it's Strato Streak predecessors, upgraded block, rotating assembly and cylinder head. Then there was even a Cosworth 4 valve head, these are as rare as hen's teeth now. The go to for Fiero info is Pennock's Fiero Forum.
https://www.fiero.nl/cgi-bin/fiero/U...i?action=intro
In my browser favorites bar, Pennock's is right next to PY Online.
