Default Portable air tank. Are the cheap ones any good?

I’m looking to buy a portable air tank to keep in the back of my truck. I was looking for around 10 gallon size. I was hoping to spend less than $100. Anyway it seems like in the reviews the ones at Tractor Supply, Harbor Freight, ect have a lot of complaints about the valve stripping out, or sticking. Anybody buy one that they would recommend, or is there quality parts available to replace the junk ones that come on it?
Thanks!

I bought the 11 gallon HF tank to use for a reservoir for my air ride suspension on my dually.

I don't have a compressor onboard the truck, and just fill it off of shop air. They have a brass valve that has a pop off safety valve incorporated into it that leaked from day one. I just removed it and put a street elbow in to replace it. I don't have a air pressure gauge any longer, but chances are, it wasn't accurate anyway. I put 2 ball valves on the end of the pipe with a Tee. One to fill it from shop air, and one to fill the air ride system.

The tank is fine, the plumbing hardware is junk. Nothing $15-20 worth of plumbing hardware from HD won't fix.

I just checked price, it's $49.99

Awesome! Just the info I was looking for. I figured those gauges are cheap and inaccurate anyway, so no big loss.

I saw that HF one also before I started this thread. It seems they are out of stock at all HF stores between Dubuque and Milwaukee!
So my plan B, this was about $10 more, but an 11 gallon in stock at a Tractor Supply about 20 minutes from me.

I have owned Both with EXACT same results as Brad.
Get a new hose with ends ( longer) your own shut off and I put a real gauge on the tank.

I originally had a small propane tank on my truck for a reservoir, it was too small, and it got a rust hole in it. I installed the HF tank under the stake body, and then the brass valve leaked, so then I used galvanized pipe fittings and 2 brass ball valves to plumb it to my air ride that I made up. You can't believe how much nicer a 1 ton dually rides with the heavy leaf springs being substituted for air bags, and you can tailor it to what you're hauling.

As I get older, I like the softer ride, especially in a truck.

Off of work today. So I ran up to the hardware store and threw this together. Definitely a lot better quality than the junk that came on there. The air chuck leaked, and I hadn’t ever used it obviously. The gauge would get destroyed by the end of the week in the bed of my truck anyway. I have a double male fitting to attach to the chuck to fill it. I have this on a short thin chain attached the the handle of the tank.

I like that setup. But I would want the gauge on it so it's not over filled and goes kaBoom.

It would have been a little cleaner looking if they had male threaded elbows, instead of female and nipples, but in the rural area I live, I was happy the small town hardware store had them at all.

The handle to open and close it is what I like. I hate that damn red screw knob.

I have a blue portable air tank I bought several years ago at a yard sale. Destroy by 2007 is stamped in it. The tank is perfect. Not a mark or rust spot on it. I've even had the fittings off it and there is no moisture or rust in it. But i don't fill it past 110 lbs.

I grabbed a free one from a friends estate sale, it was new. Didn’t know they are that much.

Used to be able to buy a kit, and make one from an empty refrigerant (freon) tank.

Yeah, but in my case that gauge would be busted in a week or two anyway. My compressor that I fill it with had a high quality gauge, so I know it will never be over 125 psi.

My compressor is set at 125 lbs, that's the maximum I put in it, I wouldn't trust the HF gauge anyway. They put 25 cent gauges on their stuff because they ran out of 10 cent ones............
