Synthetic oil gets dirty as fast as any other oil. So why just change the filter?

I was a service manager at a Toyota Dealership in So. Tx. a while back. 260k on a Camry is not that rare. But not that common. Most people trade in sooner. You are getting the most out of that car. Good for you. Drive it into the ground. I bet it runs better than most cars.

I go by whatever the owners manual recommends. I figuire the people that designed the engine know best. Unlike the quick change places there is nothing in it for them by saying it has to be changed more than it needs to.

Default Oil Changes

Tiger GtO there is everything in the manufacturer saying to change the oil more often than needed. I bet you also believe that the dealer is the best/only place to get work done. I don't mean to offend you so I will apologize if I did. They are betting on this so when you have your vehicle in they look it over and tell you that you need new wiper blades, front pads are worn, etc. On another PY forum one of the members who was a former service manager said they make very little with the initial sale, but rely on all the extras, warranty, service work. I have ZERO faith in owner's manual recommendations after how I saw Chevy re-wrote the service intervals to cover the incorrect piston rings they put in certain late 80's Camaro engines. Damn things would average 2-3 quarts every 5,000 miles straight off the lot.

On anything with a carb, I change oil at 3K intervals.

On my two Saturn Vues, I run full synthetic and change oil every 5K miles.

On my 96 2500 Suburban with a 454, I run Rotella 15W-40 and change it once a year, which works out between 3500 - 4500 miles. It's a gas hog and sees much less driving due to fuel costs.

My 02 WS6 T/A gets synthetic and gets the oil changed every two years, or about 2500 miles.

While nobody brought this up, how often do you change oil in cars that see minimal driving time?

455 powered ? Ive always noticed 455 pistons (stock) show wear around the bottom of the skirts.

I never go to a stealership for anything that is not covered by warranty. I do my own oil changes, all general maintenance plus quite a bit of mechanical work myself. Most of my vehicles are high mileage and run like a top. Being in the autopart business I know the game of dealers. I also won't argue about whether or not to follow the owner's manual. Everthing I have read from the so called experts they recommend following the manual. I learned a long time ago never argue about oil or proper gas octane.

Since I don't rack up miles I do a change on my DD every three months. Oil changes are much cheaper than engines plus you get to look things over to make sure every things OK.

I run mobil-1 in my expedition and in the daughters jeep. Change it every 5k miles.

My focus gets 5w-20 motorcraft synth blend since it's still under the 100k mile powertrain warranty, and it also gets changed at 5k miles. Probably gonna switch it to mobil-1 after the warranty expires.

My daughters TATA gets walmart supertech 5w30 (gets good reviews on bobistheoilguy.com) with a can of STP, and that gets changed at 3k intervals.

Every 5,000 ... wife's 2001 Olds Aurora with 132,000, son's '99 Olds Bravada with 234,000 and my 2006 Chevy 2500HD with 89,000 ... 5,000-mile changes, standard Havoline 5W-30 oil, with a full quart between changes on the Bravada. The '67 GTO and the '67 Bonneville get Havoline 10W-30 with ZDDP, once in spring, once in fall.

On anything modern with multi-port EFI and roller valve train, 3K or 3 month LOF intervals are an absolute WASTE of dollars and resources.

IMO, it matters not whether one is running dino oil or synthetic. Along with EFI, modern engine designs and fuels have negated the need for such frequent service intervals. Witness the tiny oil filters in use these days. Manufacturers absolutely would not engineer such tiny filters nor recommend such extended drain intervals if there was a need.

At my shop, I was one of the last 3K/3mo hold outs, but I now go 6000 miles on my Sierra Denali. That usually ends up being about 4 or 5 months of driving. I change the oil and filter on my Formy once a year, just don't drive that car very many miles any more.

There are ALWAYS exceptions, but as a rule we sticker our customer's vehicles for oil and filter service at 4 months / 5,000 miles. Most just go by their Oil Life Monitor system recommendations now anyway . . .

The GTO is on constant oil change mode. 10W-40 Castrol High mileage.
I change my 2006 Tundra's oil at 10,000 miles. Full synthetic 5W-30 with a big Purolator Classic filter.
Toyota calls for 10,000 miles on our 2012 Highlander. 0W-20. We haven't made it to 10K yet.
My son's 2004 Element and 2005 Tundra get changes at 5000 miles. They do a lot more short trips. Full synthetic 5W-20 in the Element and 5W-30 in the Tundra.

Hey Mike, I prefer Mobil 1 myself. Used it in my GMC since day one. Have you checked the label? I'll bet it meets the Ford spec . . .

Had a 2000 buick Lesabre with the oil monitor, I do alot of driving and it would go up to about 10k before recommending a change, used the cheapest oil that would meet spec, 3800 had 175k on it when sold, seldom added oil between changes. Car was sold to a friend and is still running strong with no problems, close to 200k now. Have another 3800 in a newer buick and it also goes about the same with the oil monitor it only has about 80k and uses very little between changes. My brother on the other hand has the same 3800 buick with less miles around 30k and changes every 3k on the money. He is using a quart about every 1500 miles and GM does not want to do anything about it. He thought I was nuts going so long but I have not had any problems. Engines are clean inside.
I know of one guy that bought new Ford trucks every three years for his business, he would change oil once after break in and put in mobil 1, from there out he just changed filters every 15 to 25k and added mobil 1 as needed, he ran those trucks to a 100k and traded, he never had any engine/oil related failures.
I do not do this on the older carbed engines but I do go around 5k depending on the weather and driving conditions.

It probably does meet the spec but at this point i'm just reluctant to change anything until the warranty is gone.
