Default Picked a 70 455 HO engine

Well, I guess if your patient enough, you find stuff. I was able to pick up a fairly complete 1970 455 HO engine this weekend. It has been in a shed in Michigan since the early eighties, not stored great but at least inside. Good news is it’s a WA block, 64 heads, pretty complete less carb and front accessories. It even came with a bell housing, clutch, pressure plate, starter, motor mounts etc. Story goes it was pulled out a wrecked 70 GTO and was going to be swapped in a Firebird, but it never happened. The usual someone didn’t pay somebody or whatever, and the motor sat and no one ever came for it.
So, the property owner decides to clean out the shed, a friend tells him this motor might be worth something so he posts it on FB marketplace. I see ad, am only 25 minutes away and am the first guy to get there. I pay him the $600 he’s asking for it, try to negotiate a little but not too much ands it’s mine. Got it home yesterday.....it seems pretty original, never opened up and has all the little brackets and clips that we always search for. The engine is stuck, but I’ll try some sea foam or some oil down the spark plug holes for a few weeks before I seriously try to rotate it.
I’m happy.......winter project ahead.
I’ve read hundreds of 455 build posts on this forum, I’m sure I’ll be back for advice once I get it torn down.

Pick up a can of “aero kroil” and soak those pistons. Best penetrating oil out there ( commercially available)

Nice find. A friend had a 70 455 ho 4spd red car.I believe he still has it,he moved to Florida when he retired. He put a holly carb on it,back in mid 70s and I ended up with the carb. I traded the carb to a guy in Indiana for TA oarts.

You got that right ! I have a few ideas but I’ll wait until I get it apart to see what I’m working with.

Acetone and ATF 50/50 makes a great penetrating oil. I would get it on a engine stand, with a bank up level and squirt in enough to cover the tops of the pistons so they can soak the rings for a day then do the other bank. After that, try rocking the flywheel back and forth until it get moving.

Nice find !! Worth every bit of that 600.00. Too bad the carb is gone. Should have the 068 S cam if it hasnt been replaced. My car still had the 068 cam in it when i bought it.

That is an awesome find, especially these days!! I’ve done two engines that were rusted stuck. The 1st we soaked in oil and beat and banged and cranked which didn’t turn out so well. The 2nd we soaked and then used a hand held sand blaster to clean around the rings as best we could. Then used a torch to heat and cool things a few times. That way worked much better lol. Congratulations!!

Great find! I think i'd pull the heads and start with some diesel fuel soaking in around the piston/rings and go from there.

Using a scope would help determine if it's got a shot of spinning, as is, or not. If .one cylinder wall has much corrosion, the heads need to come off, for more serious work.

The ATF and acetone, I have heard of here, another I recently heard of, is ATF and diesel....

Nice find. There's a 428 on Craigslist down your way also. 1969 out of a GrandPrix.

I agree that's an awesome find!

What's the date code on the block?
The partial VIN on it?

I’ll get the partial vin once I clean all the crud off of it

Several other members have asked for date codes, I’ll try to post them all at once when I have them

Hopefully it's OK once you get it apart. I once bought an XF 428 in similar condition only to find it was completely rusted when I disassembled it and most of it went to the recycle bin.. I'd suggest tearing it down immediately before getting too excited about it. Hopefully your experience will be the opposite of mine.
