The performance and drag race community lost one of the real icons this morning. Over the past few years, Joe helped me with many Pontiac related engines and components, his willingness to help racers out will be greatly missed. A couple of years back Joe showed me the Pontiac cylinder head chamber templates he used back in the 60's when he would work on Pontiac heads, I feel very fortunate to have known Joe, was a dear friend and I will greatly miss him.

May God bless Joe. My sympathies go out to his family and all his friends! Joe was definitely an unsung hero in the performance world. His knowledge and mentoring have influenced and shaped our understanding of cylinder head/port design and will continue to do so many years from now. Goodbye Dr. Olds, you will be missed! R.I.P......

We are all still in shock here with this sad news. My wife and I spent some of the Christmas holiday with Joe and Mary. This was a guy who was truely full of life, lived every day, busy doing what he loved. I can honestly say I knew nothing about cylinder heads when I took his class in California 10 years ago. I could make stuff shiny and that's about it. He took me under his wing and really taught me so much, I will forever be in his debt. He was one of the few who didn't make everything a "big secret". If you were willing to listen and learn, he would share decades of hard learned lessons with you. He is one of the few people in the racing world I hold in the very highest regard. R.I.P. Joe. Your work with internal combustion high performance engines will be appreciated by many generations to come. Our thoughts and prayers to Mary, Jodi, and all our friends at the Technical Center.

As an Olds owner I was aware of Joe Mondello but I only associated him with Oldsmobiles. I never knew that he worked with Pontiacs too. That just shows that he had doubly good taste.

Yes Ken, Joe basically invented the first real wet flow bench! Even though Joe was an Olds guy he worked on pretty much everything! He turned head porting into a science and was willing to share that knowledge with everyone! From Nascar to Pro Stock, any modern performance V-8 aluminum cylinder head today owes some of its design to Joe's achievements! The performance industry owes him a very BIG "Thank You" for all he has done. He will be missed!

My shop teacher in H.S. was into circle track racing, had a dirt track car. We built an engine for a camaro with a set of old "mondello" ported double/camel hump sbc heads that were "drag race heads" ported in the 60's. He bought them for his dirt tracker back in the day and whipped up on alot of ppl. Those were nice heads for back then.
