Thumbs up All Pontiac / BOP Forged crankshaft

I received my All Pontiac/BOP forged crank last week so I figured I would share what I thought. 3" x 4.25"

All rod and main journals checked out to be round and of equal size.
Real nice radius on all of the journals.
Very nice ring to it when tapped with a hammer.
Well packed with a liberal coating of cosmoline to protect it.

Measurements
Rods - 2.1986
Mains - 2.9986

Looks like a winner! Appears to be a very nice crankshaft for the money.
Make sure you get your order in before they're gone!

Nice to hear they are quality; I cant say off the top of my head, but it looks like they are shooting for .0014 clearance on the bearings. When you get it together can you post the thrust amount ?

James, I'll trade you 3 pieces of a nice cast Eagle crank for that new block.

I think I basically reported the same things on the 4" stuff! LOL!

Agree, I think we have a good product here.

I forgot to have the thrust width measured. When I get it done I'll post the results.

Has anyone had one balanced yet?

My 4.00" crank measured at 2.998" on the mains with 1.205" wide journals on #1-3,thrust width 1.139" on #4, 1.943" wide journal on #5. Rods are 2.198" with 2.085" wide journals. Snout is 1.373", rear seal area 3.185", spigot O.D. 2.75",I.D. 1.703". All consistent, and pretty much spot on I'd say.

For 350$ Crankshaft Specialist will give it their Ultra Light treatment and double knife edge it.The one they did for me looks very nice.

How much weight reduction was obtained with the lightening process?I was thinking of doing some weight reduction as well.

Something to consider. I read that these new forged cranks weigh about 75 lbs & I assume they were trimmed of all unnecassary weight, for both performance & cost. My factory 455 crank weighed 69 lb affter cleaning it up. Steel is more dense than cast iron, which accounts for the weight difference. So if the performance level doesn't require a forged crank, the lighter cast crank would be better.

If I can find a good scale, something better than a bathroom scale I will post the weight. All the rod throws were gun drilled and just about every surface looks machined, almost looks like a billet. The best info on the origin of my crank is that it is probly a 5140 990 crank.Pontiac sold a bunch of blanks to the aftermarket crank companys like Hank the Crank back in the day. They could get up to 4.5 stroke out of the factory blanks. The rods and mains came in at 2.1998 and 2.9988.

Thumbs up

Thanks to all for the great info.

My 4.5" crank was shipped today, I was waiting until all the good news was posted. Gonna build a 535" IA2 within the next year, and I wanted to get mine from this first batch.

Frank told me he had but one 4.5" piece left after he sold me mine.

Thanks again, AllPontiac!

My 4.5" crank came today. I wonder how many were sold if they only have 1 left. Pic just out of the box.
