Thumbs up The "Mighty" GP runs @ LACR in Pontiac Drag Days Race 8

After restoring my 68 GP and driving it cross-country this July to the POCI Nats. in Greenville SC, it was time to test it's track performance @ Pontiac Drag Days race # 8 held @ LACR (2700 ft. track altitude/corrected to 4400ft.) yesterday.

4590# race wt., MSD 6AL & Pro-billet dist., 9 to 1 comp 455 tri-pwr, T-400 w/2200 stall, #96 heads bowl-ported by owner, Comp 270 cam, Doug's headers/2.5" X pipe and tailpipes/weded Magnaflows, 2.93 posi, 225/70 X 14 street tires.

Run # 1
2.57, 10.13, 15.38 @ 93.39 Left in drive, spun hard, backed off, eased back in. Backing off in drive caused short-shifting on 1-2 upshift.

Run # 2
2.36, 9.66, 14.98 @ 91.36 Hand-shifted as well as I could with the factory console shifter, but I got it into drive instead of 2nd on the upshift.

Run #3
2.20, 9.48, 14.70 @ 93.46 Hand shifted, better track prep and launch

Run #4
2.19, 9.39, 14.45 @ 95.95 Light spinning, better launch/traction, wound out the motor more- no tach.

Pic is of the first round action, run # 4 above. I got treed bad and broke out running down my opponent after dailing in @ 14.7 .

Wow Les, great job! The 14.45 is about what a 66 GTO ran with about 1000lbs less weight. Must be the driver! -Jim

Guys, the pictures of Les's car are nice, but nothing compared to what it looks like in person. It is absolutely beautiful.

Harry, how much does your car weigh?

Jim,

Thanks, it should run a 13 @ the Pontiac Heaven event @ Speedworld (1100ft.) in April.

Harry,

Hang in there and this could be your future if you can learn to go this slow .

Darby,

Thanks buddy, now back to the GTO's traction issue. Dave Anderson pointed out that the GP's best short time was the same as the GTO's with ET Street Radials . 20 of us have Irwindale rented on the 27th of this month for testing my new improved combo on the Goat and I will try full slicks @ that time.

Dil,

Thanks buddy, but it's not a bubble top like your Ventura.

Les

Well, Les, I guess you have no use for the '66 anymore, so I will be out next week to pick her up....

great times with that GP. That stock shifter is one pain in the rear when you are trying to get it done quick.

Looks Great LES! Congrats. Also very glad to hear you are making Pontiac Heaven coming April 1 and 2.
If I may, I would suggest adding a 2.75 planetary to the trans. They really help to get a heavy car off of the line and , of course, you still retain your nice hiway gear in the back. I have used them for over 20 years now and I just love them. I bet it would help ET considerably.
Again, one really neat and unique REAL Pontiac!

Hey Danny,

The GTO is sequestered in the secret Iden "skunkworks" for more mods, but thanks for the offer.

Thanks Pat, not quite as quick as yours.

Thanks Steve, and that's a good sugestion. We will see you in April driving/racing the GP .
