Default Th 400 lost 3rd gear

Went out this weekend and 2nd pass went to shift to 3rd and thought I put in neutral by accident. Checked linkage and fluid is not burnt. Still a forward pattern , rebuild is about 5 years on it. Looks time to for an upgrade with reverse manual body, 34 element sprag and transbrake

So what would be common to look for this issue? it still has 16 element sprag direct drum .

I think you rolled the sprag too.
I did it once. The same thing you said , except second gear was the one . Shifted into the next gear felt like neutral with the rev-limiter. Still had all forward gears .

Is there any modifications required to drop in a 4l80 drum . I've asked this before but don't remember if there are any major changes to endplay?

I don't know what a 4l80 is. But I changed over to a 36 element with drum with nothing required . Did it my self .

I use these guys. They will tell you what you need to know and most likely have what you need http://www.coanracing.com/

I lost a 16 el. sprag at the track one nite. No second gear. I just shifted from 1st to third. Lost a tenth. Went 4 rounds.

EVERY T400 for performance use should have at least the 32 element sprag and the good "Mopar" front snap ring. There are other good things to do to a T400 that are very cheap/just labor to get done. You can do a lot with a good sprag, drill bits and snap rings/seals and factory clutches and steels..

I shattered a forward clutch hub into a million pieces once too. Be good to replace with the up grade.

Sprag is no 2nd. Prob cracked piston if they're aluminum. 4l80 drum is drop in and upgrades sprang and to molded piston. I like the molded piston because you can get 6clutches in without machine work by leaving wave out and playing with clearance a mix of 80 and 90 thou steels

The hd 34 element sprag that was designed for the Jag TH400 will take a lot of power as long as you don't shock it too hard or treat it wrong in your burnouts. The drum race that the sprag rides on has a very tight tolerance measurement, 3.159" stock, minimum of 3.185". Quite a lot of the early smooth drums are worn below this.

sprag is off in 3rd. not sure if it got off topic but no 3rd is NOT the sprag. broken piston in the direct drum or ive seen plenty of broken 2-3 accumulators if they're still plastic but I assumed your unit was built and couldn't imagine someone not upgrading that to the aluminum one but I guess you never know

The trans is a 71, so not sure about the 2-3 accumulator when they were plastic? May have found one with everything I need and fix this for a spare . It's been a great trans until now, but really want a transbrake deal.

I have a th400 here at home that I will probably never use Bill. I don't know any details on what the internals are other than it has a transbrake, deep aluminum pan and an Ultrabell. I imagine it was built right. I bought it from another racer that used to live here in Athens who was going to a powerglide. I saw it run the last pass it made about 6 years or so ago and it worked good. It still has transmission fluid in it. I don't know if sitting is bad for them or not. If your other deal falls through let me know, $600. You are welcome to try it and pay me later if it works out for you or if you just need to borrow it till you get yours going you are welcome to it. Just let me know.

Yea, i'm regretful of Posting, when even in doubt. The "problem" could simply be being 2-quarts low on fluid. Could be a clogged Filter.

Seriously, check the fluid level, & replace the filter. Direct Pack is not applying. Frictions and steels could be smoked into charcoal and still shift like all is well.

Thanks for the offer Rick, the other one is pretty far away and involves shipping cost. I might take you up on that.

HIS, fluid is full, first pass was fine, next pass all of a sudden didn't work.
