Do you have a 10 bolt rear or 12 bolt? If you have a 12 bolt you would have to change your carrier as well from a 4 series carrier to a 3 series carrier. I am looking to go in the opposite direction and get out of a posi 4 series carrier and 4:11 gear set and in to a 3 series posi carrier and gearing.

Pontiac 8.2 10 bolt housings (& early, '64-67 Buick 8.2) 10 bolt housings) accept 3 different ratio carriers: high ratio (2.56, 2.78), mid ratio (2.93-3.08-3.23), and low ratio (3.36-5.57). With the correct carrier, one can have gear sets within that range properly set-up.

Is there a way to ID which carrier is which without taking off the cover and checking what gears are inside? Are there numbers someplace or something else to ID a carrier.

There is a code on the right side axel housing sometimes hard to find or you can mark the tire and rotate the drive shaft count how many time the tires turn to the rotation of the driveshaft will get you close .

I understand how to find out what gears are inside of a carrier. But if there are 3 different carriers is there a simple way to ID which is which and if there is a code for each what are they.

As far as I know the only way to properly ID the carrier is pull the cover and read the numbers on the ring gear .

Just to make sure I have the right housing for a 66 GTO, what is the width supposed to be? I think mine is around 61" flange to flange.

All the carriers will work in the same housing. It's the carriers that are different, not the housing itself. And a '69 housing will work fine in a '66....they are the same width. The '64 and '65's are an inch narrower, and will work fine too, allowing wider rear tires. If your car is a street driven car, stay with the 3.23 gears.....it's the best all around ratio for a 4 speed car on the street.
