Default Gas tank removal & sender replacement.

Good morning

I need to replace the fuel level sending unit for my 72 GTO / 400
Are there any surprises and or known issues or things to look out for with dropping the tank and changing out this part?

Thanks !

No mysteries to speak of. Just the extra return hoses on the front corners of the tank to be removed as well as the hoses to the fuel sender itself. Be careful not to drop the tank too fast though before you take the sender wire off. It may not have enough slack to get the tank to the ground before removing it.

Otherwise, very straightforward. I recently swapped mine in my 72 as well. You'll be fine.

Hope that helps.

I don't remember which brand unit I bought for my '70, but the pickup tube wasn't anywhere near the bottom of the tank. I put 5 gallons in it before first startup, and drove the car about 2 miles before it quit running. Put more gas in & it ran again. Pulled the tank, pickup was about 2 inches from the bottom. Cut and extended the pickup tube so that it's about 1/8" off the bottom now. Also had to bend the arm on the float so it would read more accurate.

Don't forget the sender ground wire before you drop it too.

If the tank has never been removed before, keep an eye out for your build sheet. If its there, there pretty fragile. That would be a pleasant surprise! Good luck with the project.
