Question 70 GTO 8 TRACK PLAYER LOCATION??

PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN, I HAVE AN FACTORY 8 TRACK TAPE PLAYER THAT I WOULD LIKE TO INSTALL IN MY 70 GTO . I NEED TO KNOW THE CORRECT LOCATION , FRONT TO BACK ON THE CONSOLE . I HAVE AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CAR , SO POSSIBLY I NEED THE DISTANCE FROM THE FRONT OF THE CHROME SHIFTER PLATE TO THE FRONT OF THE TAPE PLAYER??

THANKS JIM

I'll measure mine for you after work Monday and post, unless someone helps you in the mean-time. Mine is also A/T, so I'll try to foto the measurements.

First, you need all of the brackets to mount it to the console. If you have those, the bottom bracket has four bolt holes which go through the console. Now, remove the forward woodgrain plate on your console. Once removed, you will see four semi-circular cast-in braces on the underside, which correspond to the 8-track bracket bolt locations. These spots were drilled oversized- at around 1/2" diameter holes- for the bolts to pass through. You can use the 8-track bracket and the cast-in locators to put it where it needs to be.
By the way- the factory wasn't terribly precise about this. I have seen the holes drilled 1/4 inch forward/rearward from the center of the cast locations, and the holes themselves allowed for a lot of slop in the position.

Jim,
Yep, orig. 8track/console/rally shift. TJH is most likely correct, though. I didn't stop to think (was late when I saw ur post) that the braces would be on console, even if not ordered w/8 track. Makes total sense that there was only 1 piece (ie. the front wood grained panel) and all cars got it. So, best/only way to do this is as per TJH's instructions. No real need for measurements cuz it will be where it will be. If you would need anything else though, let me know.

You will have to find the brace under the console for the 8track.

Ram Air- that's what I was referring to, when I mentioned having ALL brackets.
That one under the console really is important, as that is what actually supports the weight of the 8-track. The holes in the console plate are through-holes, which allow the bolts to hold the upper (above console) bracket to the lower (below console) bracket. Basically, the console gets sandwhiched between the two brackets, and nothing on the 8-track structurally attaches to it.

Hey guys does anyone have pictures of the brackets or better yet a breakout diagram of the 8 track installation? I am attempting to put back in the factory 8 track and have the player. The four mounting holes are good to go in the console, just wondering about the brackets.

ive put console units in..the little bracket kinda only fits in one spot..

i put tape one the floor, bolt yhe bracket to the console slide the console where it goes, and push down on the front of the console..it will leave marks...pull the brkt and lay it down and match the marks..had good luck...ive also painted the bracket legs with shoe polish for a good transfere to the tape too...

I mean I don't have the bracket. The 8 track tape player was in a box in the trunk, but no hardware.

I put one of these repo brackets in my 72 (I have an orginal in my 70), and they are not of very good quality. They get the job done. I don't think it will matter which one you use. You just need to make certain you cut the carpet as little as possible. I think the front part of the bracket would be in the same location as the small console bracket in the front, since the front console hole should line up with that.

My car has the console so the aftermarket bracket on Ebay will not work. Good chance I can customize one or there are some guys on the board here that are pretty handy too.....hint...hint.
