I recently bought a 66 Pontiac Tempest with a 400 cu in engine. The seller thought the engine was from a 1971 GTO, but was not sure. How can I determine what year the engine really is?

On the top of the engine back by the distributor will be a letter with 3 numbers.A= January and so on skipping the letter I.The first 2 numbers are the day of the month and the last the number of year. Example b231= Feb 23 71.
