Tru Trac w AC Users - Timing Marks?
One thing that's been bugging me with the Tru Trac system I have is the AC compressor makes it impossible to view the timing marks. The brackets, pulleys, and compressor crowd that area up.
Anyone have this setup and figured out a way around it? .

WTF is a "Tru Trac system"?
Clearly you're not talking about an Eaton Truetrac differential, OR a Curt TruTrack weight-distributing trailer hitch. But at least they're "car parts". Maybe a TrueTrac saw kit? https://www.truetracsaw.com/collecti...ersal-saw-kits Tru-Trac conveyor belt system? https://tru-trac.com/belt-trackers/ That's when I quit trying to figure out what you're talking about. [Edit] TruTrack lighting? https://www.pureedgelighting.com/pur...k_magnetic.php TruTrack Flight Systems (Autopilot) https://www.bendixking.com/en/about-...flight-systems [/Edit] Last edited by Schurkey; 07-05-2023 at 09:50 PM. |

I thought he was talking about a diff unit and trying to figure out how that correlated to seeing timing marks
If that is indeed some sort of fan belt system, they need a new name for that one. |

Yeah, I didn't name it, but guess I should have been more clear.
I mean the Billet Specialties Tru Trac Serp kit: https://www.billetspecialties.com/St...stem-pontiac-/ I drilled a hole in the timing cover and added a short piece of rod at the TDC mark, painted it white. Also marked the balancer at 0, 20, and 50. There's a very small window thru the top where you can see the marks, but the angle prevents the timing light from being 90 degrees to the scale, throwing off the reading. So I put a mark on the water pump to help with the angle, but it's not an accurate way to do things. Yes, I called Billet Specialties tech, no help there. Thinking maybe I can somehow figure out an alternative location to use the timing light, was just seeing if anyone has any ingenious ideas. .

Ovously it's not a well engineered setup if line of sight with the timing marks has been interrupted in that way.
If you can figure out how to mount this stuff then get a cheap non retardable timing light and a cheap engine inspection camera. Hopefully you can take apart the timing light enough to mount it so that once you have moved and mounted the pull trigger to a remote location you then have the camera mounted such that it can view the timing marks You don't need to mount the whole case of the timing light, you just need need the nose section which on a plastic timing light should be easy to hack saw off.

Well, technically, it's the only off the shelf serp setup that has correct belt wrap, and rarely requires any shimming. Or at least it was when I bought it.
It's the nicest setup I've ever seen, but believe it was a chebbie design modified to work for a Pontiac, and, that is one issue they couldn't overcome. I thought about mounting a strobe, but it's tight down there. I was thinking of maybe creating another scale and fire off another cyl, with a mark on the balancer pulley, but haven't got that far yet. I asked Billet Specialties tech if they had some kind of idler I could use in place of the AC compressor temporarily in order to set the timing, but all I got was 'we don't make anything like that'. I even was trying to think of a way I could just put a belt on the water pump/balancer pulley, but there would be no way to tighten it. .
