Default Serpenine set up's

Was doing some searches and came across this http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...ght=Serpentine . Did this "new" system ever take off? Looking at going serpentine. Seems march has some faults to it an to pricey form me.

Any other kits or junk yard kit to fit our pontiacs? I hear something of a ford set up. I am running the old water pump.

Thanks.

Read of poor alignment and adjustment. Those with ac, compressor seems to be hanging out to far.

They old March System seemed like it was a bit of a bear to use. The new one is much better albeit pricey.

I have been looking at junkyarding a serp set up. Main reason is the alternator. I have a huge alternator and can hear a little slippage when I have it full output. A serp would fix that.

Also most serp water pumps are like 5", so cooling would skyrocket. I was looking at a dual serp lower crank pulley. 2 belts one for P.S. and one for the alt.

Still looking... I did see a ford lower pulley set-up, but the belt looked too "round" after install see link below.

Here is the link to the guys set-up. Pretty slick!

Mainly just to clean up engine bay. Want to loose the fan and go electric too. Like more of the pro touring look.

No real big reason, thinking out loud.

Not bad. I like the set up. Dont care for the alt bracket, but works. I like the billet look like the march kit, the some times looks a bit much.

That was on a later 72+ Pontiac. I like the billet look as well. MY main reason for two belts is that I do not want to have to reverse the water pump. Plus I am not a fan of adding an idler pulley.

Then why the serpentine, if you still want two belts ?

grip on alternator pulley. I am running a 200A 1-wire alternator. At idle, where it is pumping out 135A, the belt has trouble keeping a good grip. With a serpentine belt, there would be over 100% more grip, no slippage. Plus I could run a super small pulley for the water pump if I needed more coolant flow.

V belt is kinda limited to 6.5" unless custom made. Serpentine pullets get supper small. like 5"!! Plus the idea of doing it is cool.

So you have a serpentine set up now? Wouldn't that be hard to off set if they had to cross, being such a wide belt? Again thinking out loud.

No, not yet. Still need some junkyard time. When I finally get time, it seems to rain!!

More to come.....

So how do you know it's going to slip then? That's a big alternator man, you drive to parks and light em up?? Lol.

The belts start to shred. plus I can watch it slip with a very accurate volt meter. If it is humid out you can hear it at start up.

Maybe missing something, sorry. How do you know this if not on your car? Or this info from others with set up like yours?

Pic didn't come up before. But with the wider belt, think will still be an issue? Aren't most of all the modern high horse power cars one belt serpentine?

Yup. Number of belts is not the issue for me. Just the amount of grip on the alternator pulley. Could have 1 belt per accessory that needs to be driven if you wanted. I mainly want the serp belt for the alternator.

Would 1 belt look cleaner? Yes. My wifes 2008 Subaru has 2 serp belts. A few other new cars that I have had had two belts too.

Yeah, I run a lot of electrical stuff. Huge MKVIII fan and a huge stereo. Add lights and heater and the 100A alternator was maxed out!!

I've never tried this, but, did GM make a dual v-belt alt pulley (something like this http://www.rjminjectiontech.com/coll...ey-dual-v-belt)? Then find a longer belt for the wp/ps/alt and voila dual belts?

Could someone please elaborate on the water pump and reverse rotation? I have a 70 350, if I did something like the person on the gbody forums that was linked to, would this be an issue for me? Don't really understand the whole reverse rotation thing.
I am adding a CS 135(?) alternator that already has the serpentine pulley. Will need the extra amps.
Thanks,
Russ
