Ok,

How the hell are the Jim Minos and such getting that fast in the 1/4. I had a 69 Bird with a 462 kinda mild (744) buttload of torque and only 105mph (355's). My dad runs the purestocks regularly (VETTE) and I try to go every year and watch these ponchos run like raped apes and it can't be just suspension and porting. Any input would be cool.

Thanks

Scott

Scott, the speed in the 1/4 mile is really a ratio of HP to weight.Ets are affected by tires, chassis AND weight and HP.The real diff is they are making more HP than you!My car will run the 1/4 in 111-112 if I start out in first or second.Starting out in second kills the ET.Find more HP and or lighten the car.IMHO.Tom

You do 20 different tweaks that each find 1 or 2 hp. For example, the rear axle housing is tweaked to be perfectly straight (most aren't), all tolerances are checked, and the rear end is set up for minimal friction.

HIS, cking your sig, there is a big difference between a 469 cube with 48's & torquer street/strip early Firebird & a 412 cube (or so) RAII bird running cast iron manifolds & (biggest allowed) G70-14 polyglas tires.

Oops...me not-so-stock. I got fooled by the 462 stuff. Sorry.

Suppose a stroke difference of 4.21" instead of 3.75" could have been all the difference.

Thanks for the replies,

I know some of the fast ones are stroked but some, like Jim Mino and some other GTO's are not. These guys are getting 350+ HP at the tires through exhaust manifolds. You can port manifolds all you want and you'll get nothing more than what, 10 horse? A ram air 2 bird all tweaked out running consistant 12.30s all day long. Unbelieveable! There is Hemis, 454 chevelles running 12.60 to 13.30s, tweaked like mad. But watch a handful of Ponchos kill theses mean, larger cubic inch musclecars. I guess I am jealous because my old bird had headers, 2800 converter, bowl work, etc and 105 mph. No I did not dyno tune this car with o2 sensors but I still find it remarkable that no headers and mild sounding cam can actually make damn near 400rwhp. Oh well, my new ride is a 68 ragtop 4spd Lemans stock. I'm going to make 400 rwhp from a 400 somehow. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. (no aluminum heads, but will run headers) My current 400 engine is a W72 version from a 77 Trans AM and I going to start building pretty soon with the help from all you nice pontiac people. Thanks again for any input.

Scott

I know when I talked to Mino several years ago he felt the actual Pontiac GM RAIV cam was better than any repro and made some difference.

They always amazed me also as well as the NHRA stockers running 11s with smogger 78 low compression motors. LOTS of tweaking carbs, timing.convertors etc. I saw an article awhile back on a 427 Chevy car and some of the chassis/convertor tweaking to hook up on those old repro stock sized tires.
