In my area is a 66 gto(rusted bad very bad) with a 400ci (xi code) from a 73(runs good), and has a 4 in the floor(stock). My car is a 66 lemans 326 auto, but would it be worth the 2500.00 he is asking to use for a parts car. My car is in great shape but I would love to have the 400ci in mine and the 4 speed and parts from it to. Where most 66 gto 4 speeds muncie's? Anywas what would it be worth any help would be great.

p.s.
yes I would restore the gto but its way way gone body wise but the motor, trans, and rear tail lights are good.

$2500 is a bit steep if all you want is the motor, tran and tail lights. But if it seems worht it to you then go for it.
And yes, if the tranny is original it'll be a muncie.

Provided the car is not toast, there remains a plethora of parts that can be utilized on your car. The 4-speed changeover, to begin with. Depending on the condition of the tranny and shifter, that set-up alone could account for half of your investment returned. You still have the engine, interior and what about the rear? Is it posi or at least a performance-oriented ratio? I don't think you can go wrong if your doing a similar car. Ron

the tranny does need rebuild, there are 2 front seats that could be redone that my dads 67 will need. The motor ran very well and by the looks of the car I didnt think it would run. It only has a 10 bolt rear but he says it has what he thinks is a 3.55 or lower so he says. The dash and the steering colom are in great shape and there is no back seat.

To find a car like yours with the four speed set-up intact is a blessing in itself. You are pretty much asssured to have every needed piece and by removing it from the parts car, you'll get to see exactly how it goes. Very helpful if you've never done the complete swap. Unless you pay @a grand for a tranny, it probably needs rebuilt anyway. Is the correct shifter intact? You'll have to make the call on the price, but speaking from experience, you are more likely to regret not buying it that you are buying it. JMHP... Ron

TigerClaw, Be careful. The only XI coded block that I can find, in my lists of engines, is a 67 326. You'd better look at the date code. I didn't find that code for 73, but I'll look in McCarthy's book.

All Pontiac engines have the same external dementions except for the late short deck blocks. You need numbers and/or codes to tell the difference!

Try looking here before you buy it.
http://www.spottsperformance.com/engineid.htm
I didn't see your code there.
Take a mirror with you and look under the drivers side of the engine for the engine size cast into the block. Take a couple cans of brake clean and a couple of rags to clean it if it has been leaking.

Also look on the center exhaust ports for the head codes, and on the rear of the block next to the dist hole for the year. Post your findings (if you don't allready know), and I'm sure most people on here can tell you more about it.

I think I found the problem. 73 didn't have an XI coded block, but did have an X1.
