This cool '65 GTO is looking for a new home. PHS documented as per seller. Note: It's dealer offered vs. private party. ???? On it's face what should this car hammer for. Is it worth chasing after? Don't see many early GOAT's in what appears to be it's original form. I would just go through the mechanicals....throw a little money on new seat covers and drive as is.... |

John, what jumps off the page for you about the interior?
After 59 yrs. the 389 CID and overall drivetrain must be very tired.... you say? |

From one Senior Chief to another first and foremost thank you for your service. USCG E-8 Machinery Tech 73 -94.
Now regarding those seats...is it possible at some point in its life someone would have gone to trouble to reverse those bottoms. I'm familiar with Astro Bucket seats in the early Chevs but not the early Pontiacs. |

They would have reversed top & bottom on the bucket seats?
(passenger side to driver side?) ![]()

I don't those buckets have been touched...seen allot of mileage but after 59 yrs. someone A## sliding in and out the materials back in the day weren't the best. Anyway, after observing many '65 GTO interiors on the internet I think we're good. They appear to be in the correct orientation.
How do you go about copying and pasteing a pic here.? I don't see any provisions to do so? Thanks Last edited by 14therode; 12-07-2024 at 12:16 PM. |

Looking at another pic, the bottoms are the one that is opposite?
The pattern should be like the rear seat pattern is? Bottoms slant into each other and the uppers slant to outside. Front seats: (bottoms facing wrong way) ![]() Rear seats: ![]() ![]()

OK, I see the pattern is left to right or right to left that doesn't coincide with the back seat. After a closer look the seats had to be swapped. Question do the Pontiac seats have a seat back release lever. If so, they would be to the inside facing each other??????
I went back over your pics and I clearly see the seat releases to operate the seat on its tracks....so what gives...? John, overall is this survivor worth the coin? Last edited by 14therode; 12-07-2024 at 01:10 PM. |

The seats were reupholstered at some time. Not really a big deal but should have know they were on the wrong side.
I'm not up on the prices, but it looks OK to me? Others here would know better. ![]()

Always hard to tell from pics, but at a glance the rear seat cover looks like the cheap repops with poorly-defined/flat pleats. Doesn't seem to match the door panels either, but that's also hard to tell from pics.
What's it worth? Apparently at least $29k to someone as I am typing this, provided no shill bidding (never a given). Seems like a lot to me for what it is (not really a 'survivor', but a nice, solid, complete project car), but if it floats your boat and you hate money, could be a great deal? Keep in mind, a new set of GOOD (Legendary) seat covers and foams will cost you about $1500 - and that's if you DIY. I'd probably double that if you farm it out. $200 for a new carpet. Then what to do about steering wheel? I wouldn't want to drive it like that, but probably would before I put one of those lace-on 80's wraps or some other solution (cheap aftermarket) that will kill the vibe of the car. Wheels are also hideous, IMO, but to each his own. Also - it may "run and drive" but even the seller describes it as a project car, so be prepared for that as well, along with all of the other 'surprises' that come along with a car like this. May be ok if you are a pro mechanic or advanced DIYer, but if you're an average joe who watches too much vice grip garage it could quickly turn into a colossal money pit. |

The more you look the more you find...missing. The lower rocker panel mouldings are missing....why? Doesn't smell right. After taking yet another step back it's clear to me this car truly deserves a full restoration from someone with deep pockets. Further, I think the current bid is out of line for the present condition. A dealer trying to flip it... no doubt.
You know there may be some "shill bidding" going on here....take a look at the multiple increases same bidder. Last edited by 14therode; 12-07-2024 at 04:52 PM. |

The bidding does seem high but if someone can't put down $40K-$50K it would make a good DIY project. It appears (and seller states) to be rust free. I see nothing (except paint) that a DIYer couldn't do. A steering wheel and rocker moldings shouldn't be a concern. If you have the budget install a repro wheel or a nice after market wood wheel. That car appears to be in great condition body wise compared to what is available near me.

To me, I think $20,000 would be all the money for that car

Yes, I concur. Its not even a factory 3-deuce car. To reiterate, the 389, trans, diff,...etc. have to be tired after 59 yrs. No mention of a rebuild, etc. Did the seller/dealer take it on trade or is this a consignment. Either way...pricing out of line unless someone has to absolutely has to have that particular car.

The ‘65 pleats always point to the center tunnel. This Fremont, Ca. built GTO is unique as it was built with the #614 option (sold new in California). Large black air cleaner with chrome lid and metal tube over to the LH valve cover. |

OK....what's special about the 614 option...educate here please.
Ebay bids on this car have all but stopped with under 23 hrs. till close. If this car was over the top special one would think bidding would be brisk...but as we all are aware the final closing minutes will be the tell of the tape. |

#614 option is the closed crankcase ventilation option.

And here I was thinking it was some form of a performance option. Just another BS California emission control. No real gain and why would that even been note worthy.

In 1968 ALL new cars got the closed PCV.
Nothing wrong with breathing cleaner air. |
