Came across this post in a few FB Pontiac groups of which I’m a member. Thought you folks might find it interesting as there has been forum threads about this guy. Some of the comments to his post are interesting to say the least.
If you have never heard of me, I'm Chad. that 64woodwheel guy. Back in 2009 I got a crazy hair up my a** and tried to reproduce the 64 woodwheel. I got pretty far. One attempt at molding the dang thing turn out really nice. Keep in mind I'm just a regular hobbyist. No background in manufacturing or anything like that. So my hope is in about 3 years I can retire and devote myself full time to bringing this to market. I have to be honest. I need help. How the heck do you make a production mold for this little guy? I have a wood model, far left in pics, made of walnut. the wheel on the dash display was made from the crappy mold I managed to make. But just could not repeat it consistently for production. So, if the 64 Pontiac Community is interested in seeing this project come to life, now is the time to get involved. partnerships, joint ventures, etc. considered. Just need some expertise in production molding eurethane castings. Send a DM if interested or have useful information. |

Yep, 64Speed addressed this in recent thread, but as you can see 64woodwheel has been working on this since 2009. Apparently not as easy as it looks to produce a quality wheel on a consistent basis hopefully at a reasonable cost.

I can't remember if I brought this up before, but here goes.
Lets say hobbyist XYZ can invest $45,000 into this project. However for them to go on that type of adventure, they would need to know what kind of rate of return they can get over the next 2 years. I won't use my market investments as a gauge because those are unrealistic to continue at 24% The risk is losing the money if the project goes belly up, or sales don't meet expectations. I'm not sure how many bare wheels could be produced for $45,000. By bare I mean including the collar attached to the wheel. Lets guess at 150 wheels at 300 each for lack of a better number. Certainly the finished wheel would easily sell at $500, leaving the purchaser to source cap, internals and emblem. That might add another $250, so out the door at $750 which is about 1/4 the price of a good used one. The final question being how long would it take to sell 100 wheels for the investor to be made whole (if my guestimates are correct) |

Good points, Andre. I hope someone, or a group of Pontiac hobbyists, makes this happen. It's a risk for sure.

Don't beat him up about this. He probably wasn't around when 64woodwheel was trying to do this. I'm glad he brought this topic up. I never really heard if 64woodwheel dropped it completely. Is there a thread where he wrapped it up or showed how far he got? Honestly I've been away from this board and classical pontiac for a little more than a decade sawing logs to build(timber frame) my new farm and getting ready to build my home. I was addicted to these Pontiac forums since classical Pontiac started. I hope to be able to work on finishing my silver 64 over the next couple years. I'm in final assembly.
I love the 64 wood wheel. I think it's the best looking wood wheel of all classic cars. This 4 spoke wheel is far better looking than later 3 spoke Pontiac versions, corvette and other chevy and other make wood wheels. They don't hold a candle to the 64. It's far better looking than the aftermarket wood wheels as well. Honestly I'm surprised that Grant didn't reproduce it themselves. All you have to do it change the center cap or the cap and insert to make it for other makes, or for customs. I do have an NOS 64 wood wheel I bought back in 1989 from a guy in Maine. It's going to go on my silver 64 gto I slipped it on the shaft awhile back to steer it to move it. I have a used one I'm going to do a little restoration on for my other 64 gto. To reproduce the wood wheels to a high quality level as good as the original, you need tooling made and the tooling ain't cheap. And you don't want to go to the cheapest outfit for the tooling either or you'll get what you pay for. China is capable of making any quality level you require, but when you want original high quality, you're not going to pay the cheap China price we were so used to. We got cheap China goods, because our that is what we were willing to pay for. They are capable of better, but products for export rarely required that high level of quality, we wanted it cheap. For a little additional education, most Americans think the Chinese can do it cheaper just because of cheap labor costs and a bit lower level of quality, well that is only part of the story. The other reason they can be so much more competitive than US made products is taxes. Taxes are built in to every level of production of a US product. There are social security, fica, unemployment costs, with every hand that touches a product from raw materials, to shipping, to manufacturing, to shipping and distributing, to retailing, and corporate income taxes, fuel taxes, compliance costs. All of these are built into the cost of US made goods, but China does not have these taxes and costs in goods they export. So they have nearly as much benefit by not taxing their exported goods as they do in labor savings. So the way we tax in the US handicaps us making us much less competitive on exported goods.
