94 Bonneville gauge cluster not working
My 94 Bonneville's gauges quit working. They used to be intermittent, Then they would just work sometimes if you disconnected the battery, and reconnected it. Then they would work the first time you turned the key on, but not after that. Now it doesn't even work at all. I checked the fuses, even though, they are either blown or not, but they check good. I read about an instrument panel cluster relay, so I will check that, but does anyone know where it is?
Do these cars have an issue with the gauge cluster itself going bad? I need to get them working so my son doesn't keep running out of gas. He can't even keep track of his miles. I really dislike all this electronic stuff. Give me a 50-60's Pontiac, and I'm a really happy man! Thanks for any help.

Fuse 10 in the Instrument panel powers the gauges, Also check fuse 8 under hood relay center. , Fuse 9C in the Instrument panel fuse panel, powers the warning lights. All they are dead, or just the gauges? There are several gauge options that year. U2F, U50, UB3? will be listed on the RPO card. No relay I know of.

This sounds like a poor connection. I would look to the plug going into the cluster, some wd40 and re seat connector a few times to clean connections.
Also from a wiring diagram, find the common ground for the cluster and assure a good connection there. Believe a large common ground under carpet. It never hurts to re seat the fuse/s for the circuit your working on also.............especially for an intermittent! You may be able to get to the cluster connector from below, but you will likely have to pull the fascia and cluster. Really not much to removing it. The dash components inoperative are the gauges only? Indicator lights all light when you turn key to start position? Last edited by STEELCITYFIREBIRD; 08-22-2016 at 12:23 AM. |

I'm figuring out that the instrument panel cluster relay is for the dash lights, which work fine. All the fuses check good, and there are no missing fuses. I had the dash out a month or so ago, but the plug was good, and tight. Took the dash out, and looked it over, but didn't see anything there. The speedo, and tach work, as do the check engine light, and security light. Just none of the gauges work. I'm starting to think it's the dash cluster. I think it's time to pull it out again, and check the wiring to it for the ignition wire, and grounds. I checked the grounds at the ground buses on both sides a year or so ago looking for this problem, but they were all good.

Ground for the Instrument cluster is at the Neg Batt Terminal. Black/white wires.
