Boss Bird Engine Update 2019
Racing season is here again in the Midwest. Thought I would post up some pics and a little info of what we have been up to the past few months. A major goal for this year was to have 2 long block assemblies for the car so we can continue to compete in a multi-day event if there is serious engine damage on day 1. One of the most maddening situations for me the past several years was to qualify near the top of a ladder, only to be unable to compete in the eliminations. This was especially upsetting when Eric put the Boss Bird, the only non-hemi powered car, number 1 at the NHRA Hot Rod Reunion. On that near perfect qualifying run, we broke a lifter, which locked-up and damaged the camshaft. We were done for the weekend. With the help of Jack Gifford, opening up our oil passages this winter, and hundreds and hundreds of hours getting a second block ready, we are finally ready to assemble a second block. Line hone is near perfect, +0 -.0001". Sleeves installed and plate honed to -0 +.0003". Lifter bushings installed and honed to -0 +.0002. It's a nice piece. Hopefully we won't turn it into scrap right away. Here are some pics of the block and in the next post I will put up some pics of the major head damage I had to repair as well this winter. Nitro is very hard on parts for sure.

It will be interesting to look at the section views, side by side. As a side note, the porting work on that cut up head was done by Pete McCarthy many, many years ago. Hope it's of some use in your Speedmaster evaluation.

That's what one calls a labor of love to compete at that level with a poncho. Good luck.

I don't know if it's their first, but on July 6th they have a match race with the Chi-Town Hustler at National Trail Raceway.

Yea, that one is hurt pretty bad. We used to produce some chambers that looked like that when we were pushing the Grocery Getter hard. What came first on that one, a piston coming apart or the broken valve head?
The beauty of aluminum is that chamber can be restored to 95% of it's original look and 100% of it's function. Never happen with an iron head. Even though I am still leading the charge for an iron "replacement" head. |

Keep leading that iron head charge, that would be an awesome addition to the Pontiac arsenal we already have. good luck this season, we'll all be watching!!
