XH engine code?
Anyone know what this engine code belongs to? I have a 78 TA 400 but don’t know what this code is from?

1969 & 1970 GP 400 engines used that block code.
Check the date code by the distributor hole to better identify what block you have.

XH was a 301 CID engine in 1978.
(that's if it is original) Or even a 400 in 1977. As said, need the date code for best ID. Engine Codes

In Chiltons it says in 78 there were two 301’s available. 2 bbl, was a Y code, the other 301, was a W 4 barrel. That’s all that’s listed. This motor has the small 3/8 plugs.

The Chilton is not showing the engine code itself, I think.
The date code and the block casting code would determine definitely.

Yeah we were trying to avoid tearing it down to much, but looks like we will have to, in order to get that code.

most likely the XH coded 400 is a '77 400 complete w 6X-8 heads, originally out of an A-body or F-body (Formula or T/A). Look for the 500557 casting number on the cast area coming up from the oil filter hsg mtg. pulled several '77 XH code 400's while had entice core deal going, mainly pulled them for head cores, timing cover, sheet metal, & hardware.

Sooooo we bought this car sight un seen on the recommendation from a fellow member here who had bought 2 cars from him. His name is John Kraft, and we’ll known in the Trans AM circles as they are what he deals in. The story on this car is it was his friends car who had to get rid of it or his wife would get rid of him. John claims to know very little about the car, as the friend didn’t have it long. So I have no history on it, but we’re finding out things now as we start working on it. So don’t really know what motor is in it, other than that code and it’s a 400. The plugs are the small ones. The timing pointer is gone so not sure how they timed it, but now we are finding these things as we go.

Not hard to look at the head codes & date codes on them. ESP easy if the car does not have factory AC. The block casting number is also easy to spot. The no timing tab timing covers began usage in '75 & with the small hub & matching diam cast pot metal timing tab, one will run across them up into '77. In pulling engines cores I always pitched the small hubs & the cast small timing tabs & replaced the small hubs with a decent used normal size damper. On occasion, have pulled the later usage plastic style timing tabs when I had time in Pick-N-Pulls.
Am betting the block isnt going to be an XH from a '69 GP or it would have the goofy motor mount adaptor brackets on it. Those usually contribute to shaker scoop mtg issues. I'd look at the head casting numbers, on the center exhaust portion of the cyl head, then the block casting number on the flange area. With the small hex style spark plugs, good chance the heads are off a '71 or earlier engine.

This car does have air conditioning. I appreciate any help on this one. I think it may wind up being a bigger project then we thought.
