There is a difference between a mechanic and a engine builder.
Mechanics send their engines out to builders to get rebuilt many times.
Quite often a builder is also a machinist.
Mechanics change water pumps and tie rod ends.
Sometimes a mechanic is good enough to be a engine builder.

Let's see if when I open up the Motor, if the Bearing is spun.

Am I the only one that has heard that "if you build the top end of a motor the bottom fails and vice versa"?

IMO, by installing all the internal parts in this motor over a Ten-year period, topping it off with Heads that were remanufactured, along with shaven Heads and a tight build, installed over an old, weak-ass, lower end, may have caused the bottom end to fail in some way.

Mikes reply:

My predecessor, that began this project, was a Machinist/Mold-maker, very smart, but drank himself to death as did my brother recently. Otherwise, I would "not" have had to go over all his work. If he liked to use the computer and he didn't, he could have researched each phase of the work, as he performed each task.

After Ten years or more now, I have realized that I bought a second-hand project with a sourced-out motor, Trans. and a Posi-traction 3.23/disc rear. All just dropped into a 1979 Pontiac "F" -Body, never run nor tested either.

Good thing I did not overpay for this project.

P.S. Tomorow, I am going back to Harbor Freight to purchase a new engine stand. This working on a table isn't cutting it, I need to feel like a pro in order to get professional results. The Book is coming soon, but we have not removed the Pistons and won't until we buy the new engine stand for $89 with the coupon, complete. Lou went to the store and was in a rush to use the coupon, it was late when he got there and he had no time to get the 8-ton jack that I wanted for the RV that cost $25, on sale or some misc. supplies.

Tooling up for the Engine tare down, the saga continues...

I will be sure to measure the Piston in the middle of the Skirt.

I plan on measuring the cyl. wall, in the past we measured an inch from the top and bottom, plus the center of the cyl. wall.

Should I remeasure for accuracy on the stand?

Up until the present time, we thought that the bottom end of this motor was the strongest part of the engine, now I feel that I was mistaken with that assumption, still learning...

Kenth´s reply, you spoke:

"And don't blame others for your writing, which is questionable at best".

Mikes second reply:

Please elaborate on this statement, I have no clue if or when this happened or why? If I said something to cause this response. In other words, your statement went right over my head!

As far as I can tell, by using Grammer and spell check and spacing my paragraphs, PLUS "not" only using Capital letters, that I am within the forum's unwritten rules, these rules I have had to figure out through much scrutiny, as you're giving me now.

Mike, let me try and make life a little easier on you.

1. Remember to always keep your threads/post as simple/concise as possible.

2. One issue per thread might also be beneficial in allowing forum members to fully understand what you are trying to accomplish.

3. Do not get combative or aggressive toward the people you are asking for help.

4. Learn to read the room(very important)

5. Read more talk less.

6. Keep random thoughts where they belong (in your head)

7. Disclose any condition you might have that would explain some of the odd/strange post.
Members here are pretty forgiving when they know what's going on.

8. Remember that members here are using deduction, logic, experience, etc. when trying to help. You should do the same. Avoiding rabbit holes is imperitive when properly diagnosing mechinical issues.

9. Concrete thinking can cause you to miss solutions. Keep an open mind because you don't know what you don't know.

Please don't take any of the above in a bad way.

I'm sincerely trying to help you improve your relationship with this forum.

Good luck.

People, please stop piling on - just ignore this discussion if you object to Mike's posts, responding in a sarcastic or demeaning manner isn't helping any.

We assembled the Motor stand tonight and I have been looking through A book called: "How to rebuild Pontiac V-8s" and the 1970 - 81 "Haynes repair Manual" is on hand as well, in addition, the 1967 "Pontiac service Manual" is readily available on disc.

I ordered a set of New Engine mounts to the frame side, the rubber looked beat. Tomorrow we will use the Crain Hoist to attach the Engine to the Motor stand, so we can begin disassembly procedures.

The power steering rebuild kit came in and this is the third Pump in 10 years or more, one from Advance and that was returned, another from advance and there are no more returns left according to their rules. Hopefully we can do a better job than they do wherever Advance gets their Pumps from.

Tomorrow afternoon, I will take photos, as I remove the guts from this 1967 428 ci HO Project, adequately called: "Mikes Reply".

P.S. Rebuilding a motor from the bottom up is an informative lesson in Mechanics 101 and should "not" be measured in post counts. The reader can learn from his reading experience, so when they rebuild their own Engine someday, they may find that the PY forum is the place to be, when the Truth is sought, as I am seeking it now. Without the ridicule, that makes it hard for everyone here.

I have a habit of editing each post before I answer, so that the next reader can better understand the conversation. I found that the spell check gives options and sometimes I choose the wrong one, I suck at spelling like most of you. I do the best I can do with the grammar tool.

You see, it's sniveling crap said like that, that many of you imply at times, don't "dish it out" and I won't have to give it back to you.

All of you should take his advice and we can move on with the task at hand.

Roadrage David. Reading some of his posts was quite challenging. Not only did he struggle with written English (foreign language, lived in Europe) but also suffered from dyslexia. I saw his posts in a different light after that was revealed. Another member here had a traumatic brain injury, so his recollection can suffer at times. After Trashcan was seriously injured, pain meds made for some interesting posts. Making allowances for members of our tight knit community (when it is called for) is not sNiVeLiNg cRaP, you would do well to remember that. Posting that you received a power steering rebuild kit isn't tech either, that's just a vanity post. Dear Diary...
