David, that stinks, after all the effort, no fuel!

I had the opposite problem several years ago with one of their Carter HP mechanical pumps, it put out nearly 10psi, and I kept having flooding issues with it. I didn't have a gauge installed at the time, but rigged one up, and it fluctuated between about 8.5 to 10 psi.

It didn't work better than the stock pump I replaced, at least at the track, so I ditched the whole mechanical pump set-up and went electric, and NEVER looked back!.....Cliff

Below is a pic of what we use here.....Cliff
That's what I have as well.

Monday I sent the defective M6405 Carter mechanical back to Summit. I found that Carter offers an M6122 deep canister mechanical with a return like the one Screaming Chief pictured earlier. The inlet and return lines are more in tune with my GTO's inlet and returns. Advance Auto has one coming for me and I should get it tomorrow. At this time I have the stock fuel pump (with return) mounted and I have finished my electric pump and filter mount out back by the tank. I'm amazed that when I fired the engine last night none of the connections leaked. None......
I mounted the Carter electric pump and the Fram canister filter on a piece of aluminum angle (1" X 1", .125" thick) 22" inches long. I bolted this to the tank strap bolts. I ran a floor jack up under the gas tank and supported it while I loosened the nuts holding the tank straps. I slid the aluminum angle up the bolts and ran a flat washer/lock washer/nut up to hold the angle in place. I then ran another nut up to help lock that in place. Then I put the tank straps back up where they were. Unless you lay under the car you don't know any of that's under there and I didn't drill any holes in the car. After a short run to verify that I wasn't leaking I went out on my "test road". From a tire smoking start until I got out of it at 105, it ran fine. It ran fine in that same circumstance before on the street. Hopefully after I get the new deep canister mechanical pump installed in the next few days I'll be able to drive up to the 1/4 mile at Steele and see if I've done any good.

I suspect it will be at least 3 weeks before I can go.

I was so happy to finish crawling around under the car (at least until the other mechanical pump arrives) that I fired it up, verified no leaks, put it on the ground and went for a ride. I'll get some pictures up at least by this weekend. It's fairly tight back there but the area looks like it was designed for what I did. And it's all out of sight.

I received my replacement fuel pump today and with this fitting I have everything I need to finish my little project correctly.
