Default 1968 HO value and verification

I found a '68 GTO project for sale and I am debating whether or not to go check it out. The ad says it is an HO and a 4 speed. I have a couple of questions for you guys.

Is an HO car worth much more than a regular 400 4bbl?

What do I look for to verify that it is indeed an HO?

Thanks

According to Hagerty, 68 HO cars are worth a good bit more than a standard GTO. $23,600 vs $36,900 for the HO in average condition. Keep in mind that they tend to be high. The HO engine has its own code on the front of the block. WS for 4 speed cars. They also used the Ram Air style exhaust manifolds and the 068 cam. Before you spend the money get a PHS report to be sure.

From what I see on eBay completed sales and auctions over the years I think a 10-20% premium for an HO engine on the PHS is generous. I wouldn't pay a big premium particularly with an automatic.

69 is a different story with the inclusion of the Ram Air system, there i'd say a RA (366 horse) on a non Judge is adding 25-35%

I agree with North. The HO value difference is much less than what Hagerty shows. They made over 10,000 HO cars total (over 12% of total GTO's) in 1968. They are not terribly rare like a 68 Ram Air cars (only 1.2% of total GTO's).

OK. So I'll get a bit more general here. What should a guy expect to pay for a nice '68 GTO w/400, 4spd. When I say nice, I mean no rust or dents, everything works, no tears or cracks in interior components. I don't mean high end, paint markings and correct hoses and belts kind of car.

It's a shame you are so far away. I have been trying to find something within 5 or 6 hours of here.
