Dumb Question #37
What are you supposed to use to get out the square drive plugs in the back of the block and at the distributor oil pressure hole? They look like about 5/16". 1/4" = too small; 3/8" = too big. Never had a 5/16" square drive!
Don't want to FUBAR the plugs. What's the best thing to use? Stewart

I've heard of guys grinding down a cheapie 3/8 extension to fit as tight as possible.
I've never had to pull plugs out yet, I would make sure the fit is as tight as possible and the cheap tool is strong enugh not to break off in the plug. Maybee some one has a source for the tool , a Plumbing valve seat tool might be the right size, Use plenty of penetrating ouil on the plugs a few days before trying to get them out, squirt them every day and let sit. Any engine builders have any better tricks than this?

Find a tool vendor snap-on, matco, tools are us, whatever but they do make square drive sockets (just like torx or hex drives) in different sizes.

Find some 5/16" key material or square stock at Home Depot for X $ per inch. Them just use a vise-grip or 5/16" open end wrench to turn. Make sure to soak w/ penetrate oil and beware if using non-key material as the steel you will get at HD is probably pretty soft, but it should work.

Thanx guys.
I hadn't thought about key stock. No problem to get that around this area. I'll give it a go. Stewart

I used the blunt end of a cold chisel and a crescent wrench.

Another good idea which won't cost me anything. No chisel, but a punch is just as good!
Thanx Hammered. Stewart

I just got the square drive sockets sleepy mentioned, forget what brand they are, likely mac or matco.
Those are 1/2" drive sockets,so I can use my long snap-on breaker bar with them too. But even with those sorta dedicated tools, there can be some tough removal jobs. |

I grind down the end of a grade 8 bolt (very high tensile, with 5 dashes on the head), so it is very snug and has to be tapped into the plug. Then a 1/2" socket and breaker bar.

If you are trying with a home made tool I would go with the ground down socket method. I have one in my tool box just for that purpose. If you want to try square stock you better make sure it's hardened our you will turn it into a corkscrew. HTH
