Default 68 Jack base help needed.

Can you guys post up some pictures of what the 68 bumper jack base should look like? I'm in search of one that I can refinish & I have no idea what it should look like. I am amazed how many variations there are. I was going to buy the repop base from our host, but they informed me it's on indefinite backorder & will probably never make it to the shelves.

Thanks, 68RT

Here’s a few shots of an original 68 base.

For the sake of education, wasn't there one company that made almost every bumper jack for GM back in the day ?

If that was the case, wasn't almost every base that went on the foot of the tower the same ? And then additional bumper brackets added to accommodate
different bumpers ?

Maybe from the 60's up thru early 70's ? ?

I bought this base last night from an Olds enthusiast here in town.

Would this be close? Need to be restored & I could easily weld in the two holes
that is has. Guessing it shouldn't have those in a Pontiac trunk?

EDIT: now that I look closer I see the pontiac one has straight edges. Hhmmmmm.

Unfortunately those 4 jacks all have homes in future restorations. I'd sell one if I could.

It's funny because I am 90% sure the complete jack was in the trunk of my lemans parts car. When I scrapped the body, I think I just left it in there. Was a probably rusty like the car was & back then I saw no use for a bumper jack, nor would I have dreamed I would want one to restore to have back in the trunk of the GTO. One of the downsides of dragging out a restoration for too many years. You loose sight of what your intensions originally were & the scope changes as you go. For me thats what happened anyway.

I feel your pain. When we bought our car 30 years ago one of the first things I did was toss the 14" Rally II wheels in favor of 15" Rally IIs. Wish I had those original wheels now....

I bought the jack base from Ames and then later purchased a complete jack assembly from Scott. I would be willing to sell the Ames base if that is all you need. Let me compare it to the original style when I get home and see how it looks. Will post photos later...

Actually I tried to put a jack base on my last order a few days ago & Ames told me they will probably not be coming back in stock in the foreseeable future, so we removed it from the order. supplier is apparently not giving Ames any eta

Okay. Maybe the base I have will work for you. Will check it against an original when I get home and post a pic.

So I compared the reproduction base from Ames to the original assembly I purchased from Scott. The bases aren't close. It's very possible that more than one vendor supplied these to Pontiac so there may be more than one style used on these cars.

The jack assembly I purchased looks like the jack I observed in an unrestored 68 in my area so I am somewhat confident it's correct. Would be interested if anyone else can verify or challenge my conclusion.

At any rate, here are the photos. The slot in the reproduction base is trapezoid shaped and appears to be clocked incorrectly. Maybe they were like that originally? Doubt it though....

If you want the reproduction base then just cover the shipping and it's yours. I can't use it anyway...

I have never seen an original 68 with that base you have pictured on the left. See post #7 where I posted pictures of an original from a 30k mile car. The grey reproduction certainly looks closer to the originals, but it has some flaws. Anyway how would you insert a trapezoidal shaped jack into a square hole? The jack you have looks to be correct. I have a total of 7 original 68 GTO jacks and they all look like the 4 I posted in post #2.

The jack upright in that photo is square and fits in the base on the left. There is a tab on the upright so it only goes in one way. The jack mechanism looks correct and has the adapter specific to 68. Is it possible there were a couple different designs for this year?

I think I have a base from my 68 Lemans parts car in the shop, I'll look today.

I'd bet GM might have used wildly different designs from different suppliers, long as the hook and adapters were the same it wouldn't matter functionally.

Was mistaken, don't have the base, just the adapter.

Few more photos of the jack assembly that I purchased as a group. I am thinking it has to be genuine since it has the 68 only rear bumper adapter with the sticker. Can still read some of the text and it is a Pontiac item. At this point I am going on the belief there were at least 2 designs...???

Here’s some more pics showing details of a different design than Purely’s. Mine was from an Arlington built car 3rd week April 68. Perhaps different plants were sourced from different jack vendors.
